Pietrangelo is the Blues #1 defenseman right now. Plays in all situtations and anchors his pairing. I know we all love MDZ, but Pietrangelo is going to be an elite defenseman in the NHL.

We should have MDZ and Dubi trade contracts.

That's fair. I've seen St. Louis in person 3X this year and Pietrangelo is a very nice player. Take nothing away from him but when I think elite, that's a short list -- Lidstrom, Bourque etc. Right now I see Pietrangelo and MDZ as pretty equal.

Put this in context. MDZ is a 21 year old defenseman having a breakout season. So is Pietrangelo. They both may make the all-star team. MDZ has skills other teams crave. Lock him up for the long term or other teams might come poaching.

MDZ has done that this year, albeit not against top players most of the time so i'll give you that.

Pietrangelo is a VERY nice player, don't get me wrong, and he IS going to be a very good d-man, but unless MDZ suddenly loses his newly found defensive game I think they're almost equivalent players. Also, i'm pretty sure Pietrangelo is going through an offensive slump this year, as compared to his ridiculous rookie season.

Really MDZ's sudden defensive skill puts him on a whole new level, even when considering what his upside is let alone where he is now.

Time to Update Headline

I think it's time to update the headline. Del Zotto is second in the NHL.

anyone else notice that Cam Fowler is having the same DZ sophmore struggles?

DZ bounced back, similar young offensive players

I still think McIlrath will make the team and be a good pick

Some MDZ info:

1) Leads all NHL defensemen in +/-
2) Tied for #12 among all NHL defensemen in scoring

Yeah, he sucks, let's waive him. He'll never be top-4.

Being #12 in scoring means he'd be the top offensive defenseman on most teams. Combined with his solid defense and excellent physical play, and he's most certainly already playing top-4 hockey, maybe better.

He's on pace for 50 points right. If he can finish with that many points at the end of the season, that's a top pairing defenseman right there.

Gotta love MDZ play on both sides of the puck right now!! Always stuck by him and rooted for him through the struggles, I have a soft spot for italians, but that name looks beautiful on the back of a Rangers jersey. Hoping he stays strong like this, as well as the whole team. Maybe the next jersey I get, who knows, him or stepan.

Unless NHL.com's stats are off, Del Zotto led the team in icetime tonight, playing 28:11, with Girardi second at 24:35, and Callahan third at 24:04. This is a promising sign for the kid, and for keeping Girardi fresh.

That 12th place shouldn't be taken lightly either. One great multiple-point game and he'd be in the top 5 in scoring for defensemen.

holy crap looked at my fantasy league and saw DZ was 5th in Dmen fantasy pts...........talk about a huge reason this team is doing so well.

What the heck happens when Staal, McD, DZ are all in the lineup at the same time.......have to spread out the ice time

Staal ,Girardi, McDonaugh, Sauer, Del Zotto, Erixon, McIlrath............gotta love the youth on D.

btw Stralman is playing fantastic and deserves some credit for stepping up.

He's played as well as any defenseman in the league since Thanksgiving. He got 14 points and +18 in those 17 games (and let's not forget that for an offensive guy, he's very physical). That's easily All-Star quality play.

So it makes sense to give him a lot more ice. Let's see if he can handle it. If so, we have be seeing something very special blooming here. I am still a little skeptical about him turning into a first pair defenseman in the short-term, but not tremendously so in the long-term.

Though he took longer than most fans here expect of first round draft picks, which is preferably to make the NHL at 19, but no later than 20, and immediately play like a 7 year veteran without any hiccups, MDZ is looking like one more of the gems the team drafted.

May this serve as a lesson to all those who every June claim that our draftee will be in the NHL in 2 years and will immediately play at his max potential. Even great prospects who look amazing in their very first preseason don't normally get to their max potential without hiccups.

He's tied for first now among all players, and the lone #1 among defensemen.

It's really funny how the Rangers have always known this could be the player MDZ becomes.

Del Zotto has been looked over and snubbed multiple times in the past, in juniors, at the draft, for the wjc. But never once did anyone I spoke to with the NYR think he'd be anything less than he is today.

Really great scouting and fantastic commitment to these kids. I'm happy Del Zotto is finally proving all the haters wrong and rewarding the NYR.

I was just thinking that exact same thing. He's been pretty hard on him but he's definitely instilled some great qualities in him. Without Torts I don't think he would have the mind set to be so physical. He's responded very well and he's blossoming into a great Dman.

Just goes to show that people shouldn't be so quick to write off any 20 year old.
