Semin may not be the answer (and we dont need a Kovalev type if that's what he is) BUT I will say Flyers need an answer for the forward corps since:
Jagr will retire
Read and Talbot overperformed early this season and are not Top 6 material
Voracek is also not Top 6 material, tho Simmonds may be
There are question marks re JVR
Schenn and Couturier are still too young and need a few years to develop into real talent
SO who will Philly have left that are GUARANTEED star Top 6 material?
An ageing Briere, Giroux and Hartnell. A 'maybe' JVR and Simmonds.

None of the qualities you listed are presently part of Scott Hartnell's game and he does just fine. Hopefully by the time Jagr is gone Schenn and Couturier are in a position to take bigger roles. Briere plays the RW with G.
The qualities I listed were for a potential replacement for Jags. Hartnell fills his role on the line perfectly and i wouldn't think of trying to replace him.

A quality you forgot is: giving a ****, Semin is missing that one.
For me, it depends on what type of money Semin is looking for. Fact is, 40 goal scorers don't grow on trees. Semin is a 40 goal scorer that with the right center, could probably hit 50 to 55. Yes, he's a bit of a floater and doesn't give 100% game in and game out, but he's also the kind of guy that can give opposing teams fits because the moment they come down on him, other guys are left open.

If you take a look at the previous Stanley Cup winners, each one of them had a 90 or 100 point scorer lead the way. For once, I'd like to see the whole preconceived notion that two way players are entirely required in order to win. The Flyers have been littered with them for years and still haven't won anything......

You're quite right, but Boston is an entirely different team than the Flyers and are quite unique when you look at recent cup winners and it would take a massive rebuild to get a team as physical as Boston together... Let alone to get a goalie as good as Thomas.

Boston copied us. We copied Detroit. Depth wins championships.
The only thing Boston did differently was that we employed a balanced attack style and they decided to trap the **** out of everybody.
we do not need Semin. the top end forward group is fine in the goal scoring department. I will have to think the Flyers will be more focused on shoring up the defense core then anything else.
These are all guys who produced @ 60 PTA or more per 82 game pace during the year their team won the cup.
The Flyers currently have 4 guys on this pace. One is a soon to be 40 year old winger, one is a 34 year old center, and one is a winger having a career year.

Plus it makes sense for WSH to trade Semin or to let him go as a UFA, whereas it makes 0 sense for the Blue Jackets to let Nash go since he's the face of the franchise and is the entire reason they traded for Carter.

You're totally right. Nash has struggled this year, so obviously Columbus would gladly trade their captain for a bag of pucks or for Schenn + Bryz.
It just makes so much sense to abandon your plan after 35 games and to trade your captain and the main reason the fans come to games for peanuts.

We could definitely use another 10 pages on how to land one of Nashville's 1st pairing defenseman when they're in playoff contention and they could actually use help defensively according to their fans b/c their other pairings have been quite bad.
That I'd definitely going to happen. It just makes too much sense for Nashville to trade one of them away right now.
if Semin can't produce playing with Ovechkin and Backstrom in Washington, why do people think he'd be a good fit here? lazy Russians don't work in Philly, they never have and never will. it would be Zherdev all over again. plus Lavy hates lazy players. Semin would end up a healthy scratch within the first 10 games.
i like how sandlansd types out this very well though out post and it doesn't get an recognition. then the primary reason people don't want semin is out of sheer bias.
