FLYERS-PENGUINS' 2010-11 SERIES:
  • 2010 -- October 7 -- The Flyers spoiled the debut of Pittsburgh's Consol Energy Center with a 3-2 victory in both teams' season openers. Sergei Bobrovsky, who became the youngest Flyers' goalie to start on opening night at age 22 years and 17 days, made 29 saves and was chosen the game's top star. Danny Briere scored the first goal in the new building 2:51 into the second period and Philly led the remainder of the game. Blair Betts gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead late in the second period. Tyler Kennedy scored Pittsburgh's first goal in the opening minute of the third period. Claude Giroux's nifty SHG gave Philly a 3-1 lead but 19 seconds later Alex Goligowski made it 3-2. Chris Pronger did not play for the Flyers. The game drew an estimated 730,000 viewers on Versus, the most-viewed regular season NHL telecast ever on the network. Highlights -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzBS3ZnUcjk

  • 2010 -- October 16 -- Brent Johnson made 29 saves and Sidney Crosby (2-1-3) scored consecutive PPGs in an 84-second span to lead Pittsburgh to a 5-1 win at Philly. The Pens scored three special teams' goals in the third period. Mark Letestu scored in the final minute of the second period to make it 2-1 Pens. After the game, an upset Mike Richards said about Matt Cooke “I chased him around last year in this building, but he wouldn’t have anything to do with it. Obviously in a one goal game at the end of the period he tries to come after me but when Sidney Crosby fights Carcillo maybe I’ll fight him." Richards' post-game comments -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmgT1...layer_embedded
  • 2010 -- October 29 -- Claude Giroux (2-0-2) and Mike Richards, the game's top two stars, led the Flyers to a 3-2 win at Pittsburgh. Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves. Dan Carcillo, a recent healthy scratch, also scored. On one goal, Giroux said "Richie (Mike Richards) – it was all him because he sees the ice so well." Four seconds into the contest, Richards fought Matt Cooke and later the Flyers' captain said “The things that were said last game carried over and I was just trying to get the guys going I guess. I’m not going to say anything (about Cooke) though. It’s after a win. I’m going to keep my mouth shut.” There were 32 PIMs and 10 penalties called in the opening 3:59 of the game. The Flyers killed all six Pittsburgh PPs. Highlights -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OXtAc3ck2I
  • 2010 -- December 14 -- Scott Hartnell's (1-1-2) PPG snapped a 2-2 tie midway in the third period and Brian Boucher made 21 saves in the Flyers' 3-2 home win that ended the Penguins' 12-game winning streak. The Flyers' PP was 0-for-5 prior to the goal (finished 1-for-6). Evgeni Malkin, who returned to the lineup after missing the last four games and was in the box during the decisive goal, scored two PPGs. Sidney Crosby had two assists and Marc-Andre Fleury made 34 saves. The Flyers killed a minor to Darroll Powe called with under three minutes remaining. The victory was the 20th for Philly, the 14th time the team reached that figure prior to Christmas, and enabled the Flyers to pass the Penguins as the top team in the NHL. The Penguins had not lost since November 15 and won their last six regular season visits to Philadelphia. It was the most watched regular season game ever on VERSUS and was also the most watched regular season NHL telecast on cable since December 4, 2003 (Detroit/St Louis on ESPN; 758,000 viewers). Highlights -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM9YhUUkyrM

  • 2011 -- March 24 -- Chris Kunitz and Alex Kovalev scored shootout goals (won 2-1 in four rounds) to lift the Penguins to a 2-1 victory at Philly. Marc-Andre Fleury made 19 saves. Mike Richards and Tyler Kennedy scored in regulation. Sergei Bobrovsky made 30 saves and was chosen the game's top performer.
  • 2011 -- March 29 -- Sergei Bobrovsky made 25 saves in the Flyers' 5-2 win at Pittsburgh. The line of Ville Leino (2-1-3), Scott Hartnell (1-1-2) and Danny Briere (0-2-2) combined for seven points. Hartnell and Claude Giroux scored 47 seconds apart to give Philly a 3-2 lead. The Flyers scored the game's last four goals inclouding two by Leino in the third period. With the win, the Flyers opened up a four-point in the Atlantic Division over the Penguins. The Flyers swept the Penguins in Pittsburgh for the first time since the 1983-84 season. The Flyers established a team record with a 25th road victory. Highlights -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxVKeKJoJ3g

FLYERS-PENGUINS' 2011-12 SERIES:
  • 2011 -- December 8 -- The Flyers skated to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-2 home win which landed them into first place in the Eastern Conference. Danny Briere, struggling with the flu, scored in the first period on a goal deflected off two Penguins. Later in the opening period, the Penguins failed to score during a 5-on-3 for 1:10 while two Flyers' defenders played without sticks for part of the play. Wayne Simmonds and Scott Hartnell added second period goals. Ilya Bryzgalov made 25 saves. The Flyers had a 29-27 shots edge but Pittsburgh held a 14-7 advantage in the third period. Highlights -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0P0mJD8oNA
  • 2011 -- December 29 -- Former Penguins' Jaromir Jagr, who got the go-ahead goal, and Max Talbot (ENG) both scored in the Flyers' 4-2 win at Pittsburgh. Kimmo Timonen tied the game with his first goal of the season and Matt Read snapped a 9-game drought to make it 3-1. Sergei Bobrovsky made 24 stops and improved to 4-0 at the Consol Energy Center. The Penguins scored 44 seconds into the game. Game highlights -- ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mADsQXuRywA ).

hate to say it, but i just have this overwhelming black cloud of thinking we are on teh verge of one of those awful losing streak funks.

looking at the last half dozen games or so i see a trend im not much liking.

hope im wrong but i suspect Pens loss followed by a horrifing loss in the WC.

come on Bob, plz be AWESOME in this game.

My first time attending the Pens arena since moving to Pittsburgh this year. Snagged some lower level club seats today for a great price...can't wait to see my hometown Flyers for the first time this year.

According to Tim's column, Bryzgalov is going to spend a few days with Jeff Reese. That can be indicative of a few things including Reese has a large say in that matter.

http://www.csnphilly.com/blog/flyers...484&feedID=695

Quote:
“He has to get better, for sure,” said general manager Paul Holmgren, while the Flyers practiced in Mt. Lebanon, Pa. on Wednesday, in preparation for Thursday’s game against the Penguins.

Sergei Bobrovsky will start against the Penguins while Bryzgalov spends time over the next several days working on technical issues with goalie coach Jeff Reese.

Holmgren says he’s “not worried” about Bryzgalov, but wants him to get more quality practice time in with Reese.

“In the stretch that we have had, we haven’t had good practice time,” Holmgren said. “A lot of time he spends with Jeff working on things and hasn’t had that time because he is the one playing.

“Like Sergei gets a chance to work on things more with Jeff because he’s not playing. Today, and I think Sergei is playing tomorrow, this gives Jeff an opportunity to work with [Bryzgalov] on some things.

“Technical things. It’s just like any player. You start to get bad habits. More than anything, I think Jeff needs to just work with him on some things and see what is wrong right now.”

Has Holmgren said anything to Bryzgalov?

“That’s Jeff’s area of expertise,” Holmgren said.

Hope Reese can fix Bryz. Hope Bob owns the Pens. Hope the Flyers don't suck it up.

The remedy for suspect goaltending is to just score more than you give up. Hopefully, the Flyers can convert a pile and chase Fleury.

This is almost, if not dead on, the anniversary of that Vancouver game last year that set off the second-half suck streak last year.

So yeah. The omen is bad. Let's hope the Bob is good.

No. That didn't start it. The Flyers had good wins in Detroit and in Chicago in January amoung others. Everything sucky started happening not long after the Chicago game.

I don't know. I saw that Vancouver game as the beginning of the Spiral, IMO. It wasn't a straight plummet, but it slowly began picking up speed as the season bore on. It was the first game to really set off all my alarm bells.

Didn't know where to mention this, but fourth liners +/- is getting more and more negative with Couturier out.

I want Coburn to play against Malkin like he did against Ovechkin in last game against Caps. Got to hit, push Malkin, get under his skin and he will lose his temper. Stay in front of Malkin.

Do not take penalties. Pens are good on PP.

Goal: Try to disrupt Jagr's comfort level (Pittsburgh Post Gazette)

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11363/1199925-61.stm

Jagr resorted to sarcasm when the subject turned to how he was affected by getting "the treatment" from Penguins fans in the past.

"I couldn't play," he said. "Please don't boo me."

Couturier is gonna be a good one. Homer really got great value for Jeff Carter.

Going to go ahead and get this out of the way right now, but keep it on topic and if you don't like what a poster says, just simply hit the report button and we'll take care of it. This is the warning for the Flyers fans and outsiders as well.
