To anyone complaining about money ; remember this isn't 2006 anymore. A contract like this is about 7 or 8% of the team's cap space only and will likely be less significant on the cap each passing year.
3.9 cap hit is a little bit much for now but in 2-3 years it has the potential to be a steal, let alone in 6 years when the cap could be something like 75-85 M$.
If I'm not mistaken, today (January 1st) was the first day Gauthier was actually allowed to offer a contract to Gorges. So I guess the two parties had been discussing it for a while now.
Anyway... great news, good price. Not the flashiest player, but with the departure of Hamrlik, we need to defensive stability he provides.
I'm so happy . Mah man! Gorges! Heart and soul of this team. What a work horse he is. I'm sure he is extremelly thrilled about this. He was very disappointed about the short term he got last summer.
3.9m is a very good salary in this day and age. Especially for a guy that does so much. He may not show up that often on the scoring sheet, but there's more to hockey than that, especially for a dman.
What a story this guy is. Undrafted, underdog, and now this. Good start of the year!
He's a good d-man but that's too much for too long. And he'll want Gill re-signed. I would have rathered he be traded for something good if the Habs are out of it. He could have always come back.
I get tired of hearing about his great leadership as the Habs are in a position to miss the playoffs. The Habs were missing Markov and Gorges and had less up front (Pacioretty injured, no Cole) and they made the playoffs last year. The Habs keep signing and acquiring these "leadership" guys. How about some real talent?
Gionta works hard as much as Gorges, dont see the point to trade him, will be a great mentor for kids like Gallagher Bournival.. Just like Gorges, Gio represents the team very well..
Definitely a heart and soul player who is ridiculously steady. I think pretty much everyone can agree he needed to be re-signed.
It may seem like a lot of cash right now to some people, but in 2-3 seasons this may end up looking like a steal. Especially during free agent frenzy every summer..

Gauthier's last move I hope.
How is it too long? He'll be 33 at the end of the deal. The biggest reason we're in a position to miss the playoffs this year is last year we had the 7th best PP in the league and this year we have one of the worst PPs in the league.

Agreed, unlike Cammalleri even when Gio isn't scoring he's still working his ass off and battling against guys like Chara in the corners.. not many options offensively for UFAs this year so I don't see a reason to get rid of Gionta.

How does the money invested in Gorges address our PP?

Like I said earlier.. Gorges @ 3.9 or Komi @ 4.5.. I know who I would pick.. I have absolutely no problem with this contract..

Exactly. And Gorges can contribute zilch. I'm not fond of that kind of term to a mediocre player. He can't lay a good hit and can be overpowered in the crease. Not much offense. I like Emelin and Diaz much better.
I would have at least liked to have heard TDL offers. It appears the Habs are going to miss the playoffs so they immediately sign a player who could have brought good value at the TDL. It wouldn't be the first time a player was traded at the TDL only to go back to the team he was traded from the next summer.
