d-men of his quality have been signing for roughly a 4 mil hit over the past few years. Guys like Jay McKee were getting 4mil for 4 years back in 2007. When you take into consideration the inflation since then, this is a good deal from a cap standpoint.

Habs kept the cap hit a bit lower than market value and gorges gets lots of security with the term. Everybody wins.

So if I sold Brian Burke a poop sandwich for $4.5 but sold Gauthier a urine milkshake for $3.9, that means Gauthier got a good deal??

Neither do I. I was just stating that some people likely think it's too much cash. But this is the Habs board, so we're used to this kind of initial over-reaction.

Anyways, I was hoping he'd get around 3.5, and I knew there was no way he'd get less. So if I think he's "overpaid" by about 400k..big freaking deal.

Great deal for the Habs, and he's a part of my "Habs future" any day of the week.

27 year old dmen who can play in the top 4 don't become UFA's everyday

I don't think it's overpayment. A team in need of a shutdown, shot blocking guy would have paid him 4.5M on the open market, there's no doubt in my mind about that.

Sign players during the year.
Thankfully so.

Bobsled years were very stressful in this regard.

The Gorges signing addresses our 5 on 5 game and our penalty kill as he can eat up lots of minutes during both, we have about $10 million invested in Kaberle and Markov to help our power play.

I understand that but you were comparing this year's team to last year's team and stating the difference is in the PP. Gorges was barely part of last year's team and now he's getting $3.9m per year each of the next 6 years but won't address the PP.

Well sure, in retrospect. But if you would have taken a poll back when most would have signed Komi and canned Hamrlik.

Gorges is playing for his contract right now - he's got to but good for him in suckering Gauthier.

great move here's why:

-one less ufa dman to worry about, which means trade is imminent because there is no fear of him walking away
-shift in org. philosophy of waiting for off-season to sign guys (some pro-active behavior)
-in a room filled with primadonnas and dewy softness, habs brass sends message by locking up probably the only warrior in the room and CP31's best friend - which gives him an even greater voice and thus more stability on team

Or maybe he is just entering his prime being 27 and all....

But no, that'd be too much of a stretch to assume, so let's settle on "one year wonder" instead.

LOVE IT! So where are all those doom-and-gloom posters who stated that Gorges leaving via FA was a done deal? Oh yeah, won't be seeing them post here, they'll spend their time moaning and groaning about some other speculation.

Gorges is a dependable DMan with a steadying influence - to those who ask how the signing addresses the PP, I think you know it doesn't. So what? The PP is not the only problem this team has going forward, and losing Gorges through it all would only make matters far worse. But then again, far worse is what some of you want anyways, as odd as it seems.

Awesome!

Most consistent players on this team for a long time and one of the best. Make no mistake, it's guys like him that win you Cups. I think it'll help keep Carey here too.

I consider the past written, I like this signing, because I still believe in the un-written. Stats are great, but a man with a new slate can do what he wants...

Awesome news, finally a positive after so many negatives...definately our next captain, and the next name I'll be putting on my jersey.

Defenders who will be making similar money to Gorges next season (+/- 300K) and the rough equivalent of what they'd have to earn in Montreal to net the same money after taxes:

Andrej Meszaros - 4M (4.78M)
Luke Schenn - 3.6M (4.16M)
Keith Ballard - 4.2M (4.56M)
Robyn Regehr - 4.02M (4.35M)
Christian Ehrhoff - 4M (4.32M)
Mark Giordano - 4.02M (4.73M)
Zbynek Michalek - 4M (4.78M)
Brooks Orpik - 3.75M (4.48M)
Marc Staal - 3.975M (4M)
Eric Brewer - 3.85M (4.83M)
Mattias Ohlund - 3.6M (4.52M)
Tom Gilbert - 4M (4.71M)
Ryan Whitney - 4M (4.71M)
Marek Zidlicky - 4M (4.41M)
Ed Jovanovski - 4.125M (5.18M)
Tobias Enstrom - 3.75M (don't have Manitoba's tax rate)
Mark Streit - 4.1M (4.12M)

You've never seen players drop off after a lengthy contract is signed. What has Gorges done to deserve six years? Sorry, just would have rathered a shorter term with Emelin and Tinordi and Diaz along with some others waiting in the wings.

I'm just glad Gainey's "do not negotiate contracts during season" policy is no longer in effect.

Love this signing...great deal for both parties.

Also looks like our D is more or less set for next season, maybe with a big veteran D as our #6/7.

Markov-Gorges
Kaberle-Subban
Emelin-Diaz

Try 3.9mil per with a no trade!
I think it's too much! Love Gorges but let's hope Montreal is dumping some serious money elsewhere!

Keberle 4.2
Gomez 7.3
Cammalleri 6
Gionta 5
Plekanec 5.5

Have to resign Subban and Price!

Good move but I still wish we did not have Markov and Kaberle on the books so the next GM could really rework this D corps.
