Agreed 6 years at 3.9 seems a bit much for me as well.

Beaulieu
Tinordi
Emelin
Diaz
Subban
Gorges
Markov

There some good young defenceman there

While a good signing, this team needs a lot more than Josh Gorges.

Played every shift like it was his last, since he's been here. There are some players I'd question a long term deal, but not Gorges. Next game it'll be business as usual, I don't expect to see any drop off in his game whatsoever.

The money looks big now, but in 3-4 years the cap will most likely be 12M$ higher, at around 76M$

3.9M / 76M = 5% of the cap. No biggie.

Good contract, nothing to complain about here. Another solid move by Gauthier.

I'm not 100% sold on the idea of Gauthier losing his job even if we do miss the playoffs.

You would have saved that 3 million because someone else would have paid him more.

Same here. I really don't think he has been bad at all.

Very happy about this. It's not too much. We won't be complaining about it next year, or the year after that, or the year...

Probably but it's not like we are winning right now. Would have traded him for picks or a better player... Now we can't

Fan of this. Thought maybe the cost would be a bit lower considering the length, but it's good nonetheless.

It's not a 20 day contract. It's for 6 years. In that time span, we will most probably have some 'cup run' years. I very much doubt the late 1st or 'good' prospect we would have got for a soon to be UFA would have been a long term acquisition of the same magnitude as 6 more years of Gorges.

Not sure if anyone else commented on it, but I'm pretty sure this is the absolute earliest they could have re-signed him.

There are players you move for picks, and those you do not. Gorges would have a place on any team. Teams like Washington, Boston, Vancouver etc would love to have Gorges. Do you know why? He's a valuable piece. A player who will block a shot with his head(actually happened), lead his team in +/-, be a leader in the locker room, and play a never-quit, always make the right play defensive style is something that you want if you want to build your team to be successful.

I agree that we're going to be in position to jump start our rebuild with a strong draft this year: call it a mini-rebuild or jump-start if you will. But you don't move pieces that you're just going to have to replace later.

We already have a valuable part of a contending team in Gorges. Why move him if your goal is to build a cup contender?

I agree - Gomez is going to be sent down - Gionta will be traded (along with Cammy + others) and Josh will be our anchor through a few "bridge"/transition years as youth becomes the focus!

Price - Subban - Emelin - Beaulieu - Tinordi - Diaz - Pacioretty - Eller -Leblanc - Gallagher - Kristo - Bournival - White are the future core and we have nice veteran support in Pleckanecs - Cole - Moan "C" Gorges!!

Markov-Gorges
Kaberle-Subban
Emelin-Diaz
Not exactly intimidating is it?

I was hoping we'd get him around $3,5m - $3,75m, which I think we could've done if PG had signed him last summer, but $3,9m is hardly a ridiculous amount. It's at the top end of what players of his ilk are making, but with the higher taxes in Montreal I think the Canadiens have to go to the top of the scale. Gorges is worth it too.

Ideally, he should be a #3, and less than $4m is what most #3s are getting.

What we really need on this team is a legit #1 D and #1 C. Subban might get there one day, but he's not there yet.
