Reality is that if we sign anyone, it will be someone for less than 2 million, and more likely in the range of 1 million. A "let's give it a shot" type of deal on either a youngish guy that hasn't ever panned out (Patrick Eaves) or an older guy that Poile hopes may still have something in the tank (Jason Williams).
If you've been a Predator fan long enough, you know that I'm right.
This is why everyone is ready to dive off a building on July 1 around here. Expectations get built up so unrealistically that everyone winds up disappointed.
If we sign Brad freaking Richards, I'll eat the laptop that I'm typing this on. Book it.
+1.
Richards had a concussion for a lengthy stretch last year. Thus, no insurance coverage will be available for a repeat (see Lombardi, M.). I will swing by and eat BTN's desktop (including monitor) if we sign Richards. We can't afford the contract in all likelihood, but we certainly can't afford the insurance risk associated with it.

If it is a one year deal, we should have more leeway due to the Suter/Rinne contracts being depressed for an additional year. Instead of 1-2 million, we should have 4-6 to play with. Granted, I tend to agree with your analysis. Unless we trade for a star winger, I don't see us netting one in free agency. Either that or Radulov comes back
Enoch is right. If we can find a guy to sign a single year we are good. The more likely scenario is we trade for a guy with only a year left on his deal. Of course, that also opens up the possibility of spending more if we can find a way to dump some more salary in the process
just to make things interesting, here is a list of guys who will be UFAs in 2012 (meaning guys we can could get for just next year). Play around a bit
Preds could front end load the contract for cash purposes but still would have to make it work from cap perspective.
Some highlights:
Parise but I think we would have to give up Suter.
A. Kostitsyn (Risk/reward)
A. Ladd (I like this option)
Blake Wheeler (worry there is an issue there)
Nik Bergfors (worry there is an issue there)
I was looking at the real salaries for next year, and we're just shy of $41.5 million with 10 fowards, 5 defensemen, and 2 goalies. That leaves us just over 9 million before reaching THIS YEAR'S cap midpoint. It could rise, and likely will. Figure Weber eats up $7million of that, but if his contract is a bit front loaded you could see him making $8million next year. SK is likely to see at least a million dollar raise, but probably a million and a half. If those two things happen then it looks like a trade is the only way to go

Does that $41.5M figure include both Lombardi and Dumont? I think any attempt at bolstering the forward core has to include getting Dumont off the roster.

Yes. That is every player still under contract for next season at their real salary, not their cap hit. So it's Erat's 6 million, too.

HA if I was dirty rich I'd pay his salary myself just to see these things happen.
