Unfortunately not many others are also playing like winning pieces this season. This was a good signing.
Gorges is a decent Dman and all- some over rate him - a decent 2nd line- 4th type Dman on a good team-

People overrate "flashyness" and underrate solid, quiet production.

By re-singing Gorges at 3.9 it allows you to let 2.5 mil Gill walk and you can trade him for a pick to boot before the deadline.

Does this signing finally indicate that we are done with the stupid no negotiations during the season stuff? One would think our GM would sit down with every RFA and UFA we have and find out if they actually want to be here and how much it would take to retain them?

Imponderables upsides of this signing.

- Future-oriented philisophy by the management : sends a message to the team.
- A guy that plays with less pressure.
- A guy that won't have doubts about whether or not is future is with this team.
- Not the type of player to slow down after signing a contract.
- A move that will please the fans.
- A young leader (there are not so many) : the voice of the youth. A mediator between the younger and older players.
- A showcasing of stability in the middle of this year's chaos (from a management perspective).
- A friend of many. Will it help management to sign Price cheaper?

Any others?

Under the radar upsides that will contribute to mid-term success of the team. This is what this 3.9 millions is all about imo.

He is a very good defensive guy for a very good second pairing, nothing more, nothing less and those guys are worth about 4M, so not over paid but not a bargain either.

The intangibles that come with Gorges are is leadership, is I won't take **** attitude and being Price's best friend on the team, which will help keep Price for a long time.

I don't know what it is about him... I see him play I know he doesn't make mistake often... I just think he misses something to be an important part of the team.

Plus I think he could have been the key for us acquiring something we really need in the team.

What he brings is exactly what a guy like Hal Gill is supposed to bring.

I don't know would have prefered spending that money elsewhere

Really? 4 mill for a defensive guy is quite expansive.

Yea but that's the problem with this management they're always trying to fix their problems through freen agency. If you can't replace a Gorges via free agents, there's something called trades, you know.

not uncommon,

YOU may think it's too much, but GM troughout the league seems to think it's fair price for a GOOD defensive D.

we're not in the 90s anymore... 4 Mil isnt THAT much for a good player...

You're right. And the fact that this team is complete horse crap makes him look even better.

Friedman doesn't know what he's talking about on this matter. It's bull and I know that for a fact.

I've always known players to be honest and frank when discussing their contract negotiations with autograph seekers a week into the off-season.

No offense, but I'll trust Friedman on this one.

Lots of examples...Hamhuis Komisarek Beauchemin Bouwmeester(brings some offense but biggest value is on defense) Ohlund Volchenkov Regehr Michalek Staal Stuart Brewer all make more than 3.75 cap hit.

Unless they are young guys just coming in, most top 4 NHL defensemen make 3+ mil/year.

Trust the media and the agent? OK, they would never make stuff up either...see it can go both ways...The Habs may have tried a 3.25 type of offer, for 3-4 yrs, and the agent may have said, hey let's just see how it pans out? Who knows, bottom line is Gorges is the type of player the Habs need, a character type who is a leader...glad they have him locked up.

Truth be known, the Habs and Leafs are in markets where overpaying guys seems like the norm...

You go ahead. I'm just an... authograph seeker anyway. I'll give you a hint and that's where it stops: I live in the Okanagan Valley... Gorges' home town.

...at this point of the season, after refusing to sign him at a much better price this summer. Yes, lean towards Freidman who obviously was only going with his opinion.

But it's a free world and everyone is entitled to their beliefs, their opinion. And I respect that. But I know what I know.

Show us a top 4 Dman signed under 3.5 mil that could be available via trade who could replace Gorges. When/If you find one, ask yourself what it would take to pry him out of wherever.
These guys are very valuable, no one wants to part with them, especially not signed under 3.5
Plus, Gorges is already here.
Good player, good price, good term.

You guys want a player comparable to Gorges? Look no further than Ryan Callahan. You glance at his stats and he has never broken 50 points but he gets paid 4.2 million and the rangers would never trade him. He is a heart and soul guy who has very solid hockey play. He is the kind of guy you need leading your team and getting the young guys in line how to act and potray themselves.

There is really no argument, people just like to whine about PG.

In today's NHL, 3.9M is a #3 dman's salary. Gorges is our number 2 guy, number 3 if/when Markov is healthy. He plays huge minutes for us in the worst situations.

I fail to see the problem. Some people just love complaining.

Instead of the GM making a press conference to apologize about the lack of french, how about a press conference to apologize for a HORRIBLE trade that will haunt us for years?

He's also very good friend with soon-to-be UFA Shea Weber

To anyone, please don't respond with our cap situation and the unlikelyhood of him signing here and blah blah blah yaddi yaddi yadda, I'm aware of all that already

Why would PG apologize for Bob's trade?
