43 Games Left: Can They Do It?

It will probably take about 93 points to get into at least 8th place come playoff time, the Sabres basically need 53 points.

They have 43 games left.

That's about:
26-16-1
25-15-3
24-14-5

Can they do it?

Yes, they definitely can reacht the playoffs. I'm pretty confident that this is a playoff team, but they better start winning rather sooner than later. It's such a tight league at this point of the season, it's hard to climb up in the standings fast.

Don't see it happening when they haven't won back to back games in ages.

Last year was a perfect storm. This year, not so much.

I just hope some players have a decent second half so they have more value on the trade market this off season.

I'm confident that the correct answer to your question is: "maybe"

Damn, it's the same situation as last season.

I would never have imagined us being there again...

They can, but will they? Not sure.

Washington seems to be getting their game back together, Ottawa just seems resilient and isn't going away, Florida's still hanging in there, etc.

With Ehrhoff out, Myers out, Sekera out, our D is basically Regehr + some dudes...
And the forwards outside of TV and Pommer have either been injured or not producing or both.

Honestly, with a deep draft coming up, this might be the time to freshen up the team, shake up the core that realistically is not good enough to win the Cup.

Being a contender is great.
Being a re-building team that should be a contender 3 or 4 years down the line is acceptable because it is necessary.
Being stuck in eternal mediocrity? Please no.

I'm hoping they sneak in again, with toronto, and the Jets coming back to the bottom. They need some fresh blood and heart in the lineup though. If they start winning, does DR make any moves at all? (not like I really expected him to even if they were losing...)

To answer the question, sure they can.

However, I think the popular [and growing] sentiment is that even if they make it into the playoffs, the roster and staff need an overhaul before they're anything like legitimate contenders.

Sneak into the playoffs again and not win a Cup? Yes. So what? You're happy with that?

As Corto said, Can they? Yes. Will they? Who knows.

Injuries. Excuses. Winning streaks. Losing streaks. Coaching. Motivation. Inconsistency.

All are going to be factors for the next 43. Based on the first 39 games, my brain thinks they miss the playoffs, but my heart says they will.

Uphill battle at this point, and while they did it last season, I don't think it happens again. I think they finish 2-4 points out.

And if they get healthy and stay healthy and still don't have enough to make it, at least we got to see some of the Rochester kids. I'm trying to be positive and not make this season a total loss.

I agree, if they can hold on until everyone is back, I think they can make it. I don't want to see the team just barely making it though. I would like to see them successful an entire season. Right now though, I'm glad we got to see how some of the Rochester kids played, and perhaps the break for Myers/Leino/Ehrhoff will allow them all to step it up even more. I'm hopeful, one of those days...

I agree with this. I also think the next five games will be a significant indicator. They play Carolina, Winnipeg, a home-and-home against Toronto, and then the Islanders. If they can get on a winning streak, and get healthy in the process...

Anything can happen but my gut feeling is that they'll sneak in as the 7th or 8th seed again and get wiped out in the first round again.

I predict 10th place, 4-6 points out at the end of the season. They'll make a run, but not as good of one as last year. However, even with missing the playoffs, the "turnaround" aura from last year's squad will once again descend on Regier, Ruff, and their beloved core and no changes will be made. What's that definition of insanity again?

Purely in talent terms, with a healthy roster they're quite a bit better than many of the teams in front of them.

If Ehrhoff and Sekera aren't out for months on end I'm pretty confident they'll get it together. They're too talented not to.

Not a chance, as a matter of fact they will be picking top 5.
