Odd if the the players are opposing on those grounds (1/7 vs 1/8 chance of making the playoffs). Players don't make money in the playoffs it's the owners who make money in the playoffs. Maybe there's another reason?

Some bonuses, but by team, a pot is shared for the winner, that''s how it used to be? Sounds like they took it in the last CBA & just want some control, I wouldn't worry. The new alignment seems to make the best sense.

Why? Thousands from both Montreal & Toronto spend a lot of time in Florida.

Maybe they simply want equal chances at the Cup? Of course money is a big thing now for hockey players, but they're HOCKEY PLAYERS first, money making beings second.

They should make 2 conferences with 2 divisions each, not 4 conferences. And even then it would have 14 teams out East and 16 for the western conference. But at least it doesn't change much the playoff format: first 2 rounds are inter-divisional, 3rd round are the CF and Stanley Cup final. You can correct me but I think that's how it was before it changed to our current format.

So it's actually official for 12-13 then.

http://canadiens.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=610346

"As a result of the League’s decision today, the NHL will maintain its current alignment and Playoff Format for the 2012-13 season."

Please edit title then...

Any way you look at it, it's absolutely ridiculous that the league would simply take the top 4 seeds if each conference.

If the league is remotely smart they will have the top 1-2 teams of each conference pass with the rest battling it out for the remaining seeds.

So you'd get say 8 teams, 2 form each division that get a free pass and 8 that can come from any division.

I personally think that's a fine way of dealing with the whole realignment.

Or just give the east DET and the west can have WPG, whichever of those solutions works for me.

EDIT: didnt see it was official for 12-13, Jets are getting the short end of the stick it's so bad, that's gonna make for another year of being massive homers to barely make the playoffs if they even get in.

They should almost regulate like Soccer with a 20-22 team league , if you didn't try enough then work your way back up... Too Late!

Like the Champions League?

If so, that would be a pretty sweet format IMO

I personally hope we end up in a division with the New York teams and New Jersey, for no other reason than it'd be really great for me and more chances to go see games live.

Dunno how realistic that is, though.

I, for one, am thrilled.

Did not like the idea of playing the same team every year in the play-offs. I'm sick enough of playing the Bruins in the current format.

I'd almost prefer it if we only played Boston & Toronto, OK New York also... Hell make an original 6 division!

Just to throw in my two cents, I think this would be a great way to re allign...

No conferences, no divisions - but you keep the new proposed schedule, with a little twist.
-Teams that are closer to eachother play eachother more often, some years 7 times, other years 6 times. You could even switch it up, so for example Montreal could play Toronto 6 times one year, but then the next year they only play Toronto twice as they will all with all the West Coast teams every year, and that way they could play a team like New York, or Pittsburgh 6 times a year, but every other year. Just so it's not the same type of schedule every year.

-Top 16 move on, 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15...etc

-This will never happen because the league's clearly aiming to fit a Wild Card week type thing into the season. More hockey=more money.

i had a feeling this would happen.

i mean i like their idea for realignment for travel purposes, and all, but thier proposal was not well thought out.

here is my solution:

they keep the new 'conference' but instead call them divisions. so 4 divisions.

keep east and west conference.

2 divisions per conference.

if phx moves somewhere east then that is ok, 15 teams in each conference. if not move clb or nsh to east.

playoff ranking go top 8 team in each conference. playoff chances equal for all.

top seed in each division is ranked 1,2 in their respective conference.

that fixes playoff problem

as for the schedule, im not a fan of their proposed format either. my solution

every team plays its conference team 4 times 4x14=56

then teams play all other conference 2 times 2x15=30

86 game schedule!

....

profit
