NHL realignment dead

Figures this news is big enough to warrant a thread

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=610343

NHLPA rejects league realignment plan ,, League after 4 weeks of trying to get an agreement with NHLPA has announced they will have to scrap the planned realignment for next season

Lots of teams screwed over especially Winnipeg

No Winnipeg/Dallas/Minnesota next year

Fehr's crusade to destroy NHL like he did MLB has begun ,,, Expect a nasty fight between NHLPA/NHL

Just stupid. The NHLPA shouldn't have the right to refuse a realignment plan, especially when the BOGs already approved it.

There was nothing wrong with the NHL's proposed realignment..

I'm wondering the same thing. The brief article doesn't mention any specific qualms that the NHLPA may have had with the proposed realignment. The only two objections I can envision would be unbalanced conferences (in terms of the amount of teams in each), and additional travel time (which didn't seem to be grossly increased). Unless there were other specific concerns about future realignment in regards to teams relocating - or the more likely scenario that the NHLPA views this as some sort of bargaining chip in future negotiations that they'll use as a concession.

Unbalanced conferences are the only legitimate reason they could've blocked that plan.

A shame too, I loved the idea.

Let's see if we have the same problems with the CBA this summer.

Guess they'll just have to add two more expansion teams...

League is looking into legal options against the NHLPA for (NHL claims "unreasonably") witholding consent.

Plus some tweets from LeBrun:

Real_ESPNLeBrun
NHLPA says it was willing to continue to talk this through but league had imposed deadline today... So union said No to plan

Real_ESPNLeBrun
League needed deadline because schedule maker has to get going next year's sked

Real_ESPNLeBrun
NHLPA says extra travel was major concern as well as playoff structure.... Union says it consulted with players on conf calls ...

Real_ESPNLeBrun
Bottom line here, folks, the rhetoric and gamesmanship in next labor talks has begun

BS

This realignment would have made travel better for most teams

Ferh is setting NHLPA up to fight a war with NHL that it cant win and will only kill the NHL's popularity and future

Screw you Fehr ,, You ruined MLB and your going to ruin hockey

Way too early to say that it's dead, but comes off as a massive misstep by the NHLPA, imho. Regardless of what they say, this is going to come across as being needlessly antagonistic by the players' association, and will be the type of things that the public will remember when the new CBA negotiations begin.

Don't think the NHLPA picked a good battle to fight here.

It is dead ,,, NHL has to set schedule for next year and will have to use this years alignment divisions

Oh yeah, I know..... meant it's not necessarily dead after next season, though. Doubt that this will be the last we hear of this proposal..... though it will be very weird for Winnipeg to be in the Southwest and (likely) Quebec City playing in the Pacific next year.....

Travel would have been far worse for players under the new system. Team on the coasts would visit the opposite coast more often than they used too. The only teams travel would have been less for is teams currently in the midwest.

That being said I'm disappointed. I liked the proposed new system. And I agree that this is Fehr starting his usual BS.

I hope this isn't their "power" move and make CBA very hard to get through. I thought the realignment was the best and a great plan. Yes there are a couple problems but I think the pluses with it outweigh the minuses. I was really looking forward to having the Wild and Stars as conference mates and keeping the Wings in our conference. If the Wings get to skip off to the easy East I'm going to be very mad!

True. But the travel would have evened out with the East and West. It is more tilted towards the West now.

Pretty easy why, so they could use it as a bargaining chip.

EDIT: Didn't see swanny's post. My point was the same, that travel would be more even across the board.

It was a ridiculous plan and the players had every right and good reason to reject it.

Increased travel and unfair balance for attaining the playoffs being 2 no brainers to rejecting it.

FYI......the Chicago Blackhawks players rejected it along with 27 other clubs rosters.
