Once again: Why Nashville and not Columbus or Detroit? Both are further east than Nashville and are in the Eastern Time Zone (like every team in the Eastern Conference), unlike Nashville, which is the Central Time Zone. I suspect Nashville fans would not be happy to have ALL away games in their conference start a hour earlier than they would at home.
Nashville is the most obvious fit in the Southeast division. Anything else and the geography of the divisions gets thrown for a loop. Detroit in the Southeast?
I'm sure Nashville would gladly trade the time zone issue for not having to go to California and Vancouver all the time.
Just put Columbus in the East and Winnipeg in the West. Call it a day...
Its not that simple. Columbus I am sure might like it but for a team who is struggling financially, they like when there rivals come in like Chicago and Detroit.
Detroit has been asking to be in the eastern conference for YEARS.
Nashville is literally in the Southeast.
Dallas hates having to travel 3 hours by plane and into a different time zone to play DIVISION games. Could you imagine the Rangers having to play Detroit on Friday and then fly back to play Philadelphia at home on Saturday REGULARLY? That's what Dallas has to do.
Washington wants to stop flying to Florida all the time.
Winnipeg should be in the West.
There are a lot of teams who have legitimate gripes and the league was trying to fix as many of them in one swoop as possible. Just because it doesn't effect the Rangers all that much doesn't mean there aren't legitimate problems for quite a few teams.
Realignment will happen at some point but why shouldn't the PA use it as a chip?
Bobby Ryan scored another highlight reel goal. Looks nice on Youtube. The Islanders are pathetic. Another lost season. They don't defend. All of the Ducks goals were defensive breakdowns. Missed assignments. Torts would've taken a sledgehammer out and torn walls down if the Rangers made those mistakes.
If Columbus likes when Detroit and Chicago come in, they'll make even more money when the Rangers, Montreal, Washington, Pittsburgh, etc. come into town.
Houston is moving to the AL in baseball which is weird so why can't one of Columbus/Nashville/Winnipeg/etc. move?
Also, the travel arrangements do stink for certain teams but it's up the the NHL to alleviate the situation. If Dallas has to be in Cali, then they should have an all out Cali trip and play those teams plus Vancouver and enough time to properly recover. It can be done. The Rangers just played the Islanders in back to back home games over the Christmas weekend. A little strange but it was in the schedule.
Also, before any changes are made, Phoenix, Columbus, and even the Islanders all need to have their situations resolved. It would be moronic to realign and then these teams end up anywhere from Seattle to Milwaukee, to Quebec City and have to do this all over again in 4-5 years.
Season is almost 1/2 over. Some teams have played 41 games already. Calgary has played 42 and SJ just 37.
Looking at the conference standings. 4 playoff teams from last season are out of the top 8 right now
Buffalo made a great run in the 2nd half last season. They're 5 points out of 8th even in games played with 8th seed Toronto. Tyler Myers returned last night.
The Caps could win their division. 4 points behind FLA with 3 games in hand.
TB and Montreal look like lost causes. 8 points behind 8th. TB's goaltending is not very good which is being nice. The Habs brass is too busy apologizing and throwing the coach under the bus because he doesn't speak french.
