Yep, sure they can.

Answer me this, when is the last time you saw a referee call a penalty and referenced a rule that wasn't in the rule book?

Good spirited, albeit staged, scrap there. Kudos to both guys.

Whatever happened to Steve Mason? The hype is gone after his promising rookie season.

If I'm fighting someone, I'm going to make sure we both remove our helmets.

It could easily be interpreted as preventing the goalie from moving freely in his crease and disrupting his ability to make the save, which is in the rulebook. Doesn't matter how it is done.

Kings, fighting? What gives? Not a fan of fighting, but still good to see the Kings involved in some physical play (besides Williams).

Except...it does.

Curious,

How many times do you see forwards battling in front, and knocking a defender on the goalie or in his way?

Why don't you see those called as goaltender interference??

Some goalies come and go so fast it's hard to say.

I think he's always been an average goalie at best at the NHL level that received a lot of hype because he had 10 shutouts his rookie season. While that's a great feat, it inaccurately skewed the season he had in the other 51 games and since he's not getting a shutout every 6 games anymore (not that it should be expected) his stats now more accurately reflect the kind of goalie he is.

He's still young so I hope he can get back on track and it doesn't help that he plays for a bad team so he's not all to blame.

It seems you guys are just interpreting the rule differently.

What are you talking about? They reference rules in the rulebook, the discretionary aspect of it all comes with the interpretation of the rule... Just think of government. We have laws, and then individuals that interpret and enforce those laws... Lots of things happen in a hockey game, if it can be interpreted to the rulebook, then the referee can make a discretionary call in the best interest of the game. If someone is throwing the net around and it is disrupting the game, it is a delay of game, or if he is hitting the goaltender with the net, it is interference. You don't have to be a mindless robot. You can actually think critically and make correct calls.

They can be. It depends on how the referee sees it. Obviously if it is the forward intentionally pushing a defenseman into the goaltender it is interference. If it is just some random contact, then it could be ruled the other way. I don't understand how this is foreign to you.

Well you also need to remember who his head coach at the time was. Hitch was big on defense, so that helped his cause, too. But once he got mono, he was never the same. It all went downhill. Of course then Hitch was gone the following season and it further spiraled downhill.
