Rangers Prospect Poll: #1

The WJC is over and so it's time to do our mid-season prospect rankings.

Please write who you want added to the poll, and give a reason for it. This makes the discussion here more lively.

THE RULES

WHO IS A PROSPECT: We can't all have different standards based on what we each want personally. We are on the HF board, so let's follow their rules. The standard for what's a prospect is here: http://www.hockeysfuture.com/whatmakesaprospect

* Please don't write that so-and-so should or should not be a prospect. It's not up to each individual here to decide, it's up to the HF rules.

HOW TO RANK PROSPECTS: Based on their value in a hypothetical trade or waiver draft. This takes into consideration a prospect's ceiling, how close he's to making it, his health, work ethic, the whole deal. Imagine there was a prospect waiver draft and you could keep only one prospect. That guy is our #1 prospect. Then imagine we had one more waiver protection. That guy is our #2 prospect.

CATEGORIES: We'll have top 20 prospects with 5 unranked honorable mentions. The top 10 will be "Top Prospects", the second 10 will be "Second-Tier" and the final 5 will be "Projects & Suspects". This is less than the normal number of prospects we have because the prospect quantity has gone done. We traded 2 picks and a prospect for Erixon, we dealt away Kundratek, McDonagh graduated, etc. The quality is still great, but the quantity is not as great as before, so 20+5 should be enough.

The first 6 options in the poll are the top 6 prospects from the summer who haven't graduated.

The previous rankings from the summer of 2011:

TOP PROSPECTS

1. LW Chris Kreider
2. D Ryan McDonagh
3. D Tim Erixon
4. RW Christian Thomas
5. D Dylan McIlrath
6. LW Mats Zuccarello
7. LW J.T. Miller
8. LW Carl Hagelin
9. RW Jesper Fasth
10. D Pavel Valentenko

SECOND-TIER PROSPECTS

11. C Oscar Lindberg
12. D Tomas Kundratek
13. LW Ryan Bourque
14. C Andrew Yogan
15. C Steven Fogarty
16. RW Shane McColgan
17. C Michael St. Croix
18. RW Dale Weise
19. D Mikhail Pashnin
20. D Blake Parlett

SUSPECTS & PROJECTS

21. RW Andreas Thuresson
22. G Scott Stajcer
23. D Samuel Noreau
24. LW Jason Wilson
25. D Jyri Niemi

HONORABLE MENTIONS
(Listed based on how many votes they got in the last round.)

26. D Peter Ceresnak
27. G Cameron Talbot
28. LW Tommy Grant
29. G Jason Missiaen
30. RW Danny Hobbs

Voted for Kreider.

Add St. Croix who is dominating Canadian Juniors. Should be up in the poll there very early based on his play this season.

Chris Kreider. He has the potential to be lethal. I don't know the whole story behind the BC thing, but it sucks that over the last couple years he hasn't been getting the most playing time and then there's the whole not that many games in the NCAA thing. On the flip side, he showed what he can do at the WJHC 2 years in a row AND the World Cup for team USA. Huge turnaround year for BC so far this season, too.

Chris Kreider... I don't think this poll will be close.

Add St. Croix... how has he been playing? (Only going by his statistics)

Kreider, add St. Croix.

(Fasth would've been my add but for the injury - he's up next.)

Kreider, add Fasth

Just a technicality, but shouldn't Zuccarello still be on the list? He only has 45 NHL games, so he should still be a prospect under HF guidelines.

No, he turned 24. His graduation is one of the reasons I reduced the total number of ranked prospects from 25 to 20.

He is a European signed at the age of 22 and thus has three seasons to meet the criteria. And in any case, he'd be considered a prospect until the completion of the season where he turned 24 (ie this season).
he should still be listed, although I doubt he would make the top 6 again anyway.

I also voted Erixon knowing I would be in the minority. Been at about a point per game with the Whale, which as a dman is nothing to sneeze at.

I'm just not quite sold on Kreider yet.
