Yes one more chance.

But he has to produce. I don't care if he gives a good effort, that's why we have role players making 2-3 million.

maybe if he changed his number back to 91..

honestly i give him one last shot to redeem some dignity if only to get some partial trade value. otherwise you can bet he is bought out this summer.

in terms of space in lineup, either he centers 4th line or plays wing. i would give him some pp time though. he was actually effective at bringing the puck into the zone, but thats about it.

Yeah, he's good at bringing the puck from d-zone to the opponent blue line, and that's about it. But it's not like something this team needs or fails to do. All the players above can do that quite easily with their speed and agility. Gomez is slightly better but he's not missed just because of that.
When you bring speed into it, that's more looking at a situation where they are gaining the zone against little resistance. When there are defencemen that our players need to get around in order to get into the opposition's zone, Gomez is one of the best.

Plekanec has been awful at getting around players for the most part this season, and Gionta's speed is useless when he has to get around multiple players (up close) to get into the zone. Those two players have been pretty mediocre at gaining the zone this season, and Eller has only recently picked up his play in that regard.

Cole has been exceptional at this. Max Pacioretty for the most part just dumps it in, and AK is okay. The best players at this in my opinion are Cole, DD and Gomez. When only one of your centerman is any good at this, it's not a good sign. He just needs to get better at actually playing the puck once he gets into the zone.

Of course, this is all personal opinion/observations, and you have your right to disagree. I just feel we are missing this is aspect to our game.

kostitsyn, moen, eller, pacioretty, and cole are slowly redefining Montreal's identity at forward and I'm liking it.

You forgot DD who is a good part of it. And Leblanc is next in line.

Yes, DD is small but feisty and plays well with the power forwards. I like Leblanc's game and lets not forget Gallagher in the future. That guy is for real...reminds me of Marchand.

I would give him another chance, frankly i dont think we have much choice with the salary/contract. we bury him in the minors... and imo it'll be a huge waste to molson's pocket. im sure that'll haunt us somewhere... If we buy him out, there was an excellent thread/post talking about the extra length that punishes us for (something like 3.7 for another 3-4 years)...

New coach, perhaps a much better gomez is ready to show up? (One can hope) he can reclaim some value so that he's not a horrendous negative to the trading block...
I dont like the idea of blowing picks to get rid of a contract...

The only clear thing for me, is that Gomez more than likely only has this 1/2 season to impress ANYONE at all in to taking a zinger on him.

This being said, I know I heard PHX was interested in summer due to his latin roots, and Team USA history... He'd be marketable in that market...

Otherwise, STL (Davidson has good history with Gomez, they're good friends), and NYI (the NY area, due to his long time spent being a ranger, and a devil).... Ive also heard as destinations...

However with an open offensive game, I think Gomez would actually be able to show that he's much better than he has looked like over the past year and 1/2. I refuse to acknowledge that he's lost all of it already. Maybe he just couldnt play in Martin's defensive system game... Last summer when they resigned Gill, there was a conversation in re: the 09 playoffs, talking about how the boys were complaining to eachother as to how to play the game... Gomez on the one side, thinking offensively. Gill on the other... defensively. From the account, Gill won...
I think Goomez has more or less struggled putting points up in this defensive scheme

Maybe put him on the wing, I never want to watch that idiot "rush an dump" again. Energy line or defensive grinder, he has been completly surpassed by every one of our centres.

Tough choice given the need to win and win now and often to make the playoffs.

The problem right now is that he'll need a few games to get in game shape and the team can't really afford that right now.

On the other hand, can the team not afford to give another chance to a guy who makes so much and who was a decent player not that long ago?

If it were my call, I'd probably give him 6-7 games with two good wingers after a few "game shape" games in spot duty. If the experiment were to fail, then it would be : "Welcome to Copps Coliseum, Mr. Gomez".

If the Habs MUST play him then ok, send him out to fight against Chara or Lucic 20 times or until he quits hockey and retires and goes back to Alaska. If he won't fight then down to the minors. Can the Habs send him all the way down to east coast league? or pee wee? better yet can the Habs send him on an exchange program to Kazakhstan?

Its not about giving gomez another chance. You should already know by now what you are going to get out of him.

What makes it diffcult this year for gomez is the play of DD, and the emerging presence of Eller. Last year, you had nobody to take his spot so you just hoped for the best. This year, other players have passed him within the organization.

I have no idea how cunneyworth plans to use him, but the habs have not missed him one bit.

You know, maybe if he played the whole season, we'd be in a playoff spot. Afterall, he's never missed the playoffs in his entire career. He must be doing something right.

My guess is that a cap floor team will take him on and buy him out:

Buyout Details
SEASON SALARY CAP HIT BUYOUT SAVINGS BUYOUT CAP HIT
2012-13 $5,500,000 $7,357,143 $1,666,667 $3,833,333 $3,523,810
2013-14 $4,500,000 $7,357,143 $1,666,667 $2,833,333 $4,523,810
2014-15 $0 $0 $1,666,667 -$1,666,667 $1,666,667
2015-16 $0 $0 $1,666,667 -$1,666,667 $1,666,667

It will only cost them 1.66+ a year for four years for all that cap hit. The Habs may need to sweeten the pot or take some garbage in return, but it's reasonable.

Joking aside, it would be interesting to know how many total games Gomez has played for Montreal, and what the team's winning percentage is with him in the lineup, compared with him not being in the lineup.

It's not up to US to give Gomez another chance. It depends on how he plays when he sees action. As for getting rid of him immediately in one way or another, it wouldn't be easy and would probably be costly.

"Gomez souhaite revenir cette semaine. Si ce n'est pas au centre, c'est ok pour lui. "J'irai à l'aile ou à la défense si on me le demande."
