Marc-Andre Bourdon...

I know he scored today but I'm sorry, what happened to him exactly? He went from playing his best hockey since the Q, to being worse then Lilja, something I didn't even think was possible. Whats been up with him? Is he hurt?

Nah, he is still a rookie in the NHL. He is going to have nights like this.

It's just been the past two games hasn't it? The entire team was turning the puck over.

Expecting a lot from a young rookie, as was done with Marshall.

These are both young and inexperienced kids, playing in a system that isn't very sound defensively to begin with. Both players are going to have inconsistencies and it's part of their learning curve, they likely won't be reaching full potential for a couple of years.

A rookie will have growing pains. He's been giving the puck away a lot lately, but he gets a pass from me tonight since Carle didn't give him any help at all out there.

Still, if we get Gustafsson up and he continues to play like he did right before he got injured, and we're able to swing a deal for a strong, physical and defensively strong dman, then Bourdon goes back to the Phantoms. There are quite a few ifs there though, and I definitely prefer Bourdon over Lilja or Walker.

He is only bad in the third period I swear. he gets off to good starts and as the game progresses he screws up.

Less bonehead for my buck mostly. Way too many giveaways the last few games.

This is a very tough and intense system to begin with so things like this will happen. Bourdon is going to be a good player in this league.

Eh, I guess it depends on the definition of good. I think his HIGHEST upside if he does everything right is an average #4. I think he will be a 5/6 for his career though.

i think Bourdon is fine. he is going to make mistakes like any young defenseman. He wont learn a damn thing sending him to the AHL. Keep playing the kid, hes going to make mistakes like I said. Hopefully he will learn from it.
We can have patience with the young forwards and even the young goalies. but defenseman? they need to be ready to play in the NHL and not make mistakes right from the get go. unreal.

I don't expect much anyways, what with the Flyers' history with developing Dmen

Bourdon might already be one of the 5 best the Flyers have produced since Chris Therien.

He's a third pairing defenseman, and he plays like it.

Thats the problem when you loose players like Pronger. The guys filling in can step up there game for 10, 15 maybe even 20 games but then start to come back to earth. There is a reason why they are minor league players "filling in" for the established NHL players. There is no way they loose the game yesterday if Pronger is in the lineup. The loss of Pronger will only get maginified as the season goes on and it is very concerning in my opinion. God forbid Timonen ever misses extended time too, the flyers will be in serious trouble. I think Laviolette and Holmgren know this and that is why a trade for a Dman will be coming sooner rather then later..

This ^ and basic math..his minutes have been extended thus he's been exposed more and is more susceptible to rookie breakdowns. This is what happens when you lose your best defenseman and the second best has to play injured like he always does b/c we run them into the ground due to a supporting cast that plays inconsistent or in the case of Lilja just plain suck...

They need a big minute D man at the deadline period...sadly we may have to pay a premium...which isn't exactly out of the norm for this team..

i don't know what we were expecting from him. he's played well enough for a rookie 6th/7th defenseman. what i don't understand is why Lavi seems to be completely disregarding the fact that the defensive play in his system is becoming a huge glaring weakness, as are his strange line decisions. like last night when we had a bad goal scored against us (the one that went to review) and he comes back with carle and bourdon and briere's line. i don't understand that. Bourdon and Carle are the 2 biggest turnover machines on the team, why he even has them together, let alone why he would put them out after a bad goal is beyond me.

i think it's pretty obvious that this team needs defensive help, and a tweaked system.

Lavy's system is also a high octane offensive type system. One of the main reasons why we are scoring goals. He is probably trying to balance between the two, hoping the skill of the defense can support a system that benefits the offense. I am one of the people here that find it hard to beleive that from last years defense to this years, is so much different.

Last Year:

(Pronger)
Timonen
Coburn
Carle
Meszaros
O'Donnell
Then a combination of a bunch of other players (Boynton, Syvret, Bartulis etc)

This Year:

(Pronger)
Timonen
Coburn
Carle
Meszaros
Lilja
Bourdon

The only difference here is Lilja is in OD's spot and honestly, OD wasnt a stud last year. He was alright, but not a game changer. Timonen, I think, has been better this season than last.

Now, the main thing you can argue is that Richards and Carter single handedly made our defense better. But this then throws out what Read, Talbot, and Couturier have done defensively (which I think most would agree have done a good job in that department). I would not blame the system, but the play of some of these players. An example is Lilja continuously getting beat 1 on 1. This is not the system fault, but Lilja's playing ability. Then there was when Schenn let the guy chill infront and scored an easy goal. Again, need to have better defensive awareness, had nothing to do with the system. Then there is Breezy who arguably let in two soft goals. This is expected when we had Boucher/Leighton/Biron/etcetc in net, but not from our now franchise goaltender.

My biggest concern is how we have the same defense and yet it seems 10 times worse. We were called the best defense in the NHL. Now it seems to be the opposite. Not sure why...

Well, we did trade Richards and Carter. Say whatever you want but both players played decent D and good shut down role for the most part.. Also, both are 30 goal scorers.
