Fredrik Claesson @ WJC

Can any INFORMED member comment on his play during the World Juniors. Not sure what to expect out of him as a prospect, but already having played a full season in the SEL as a 19 yr old D-man is promising isn't it?

At the wjc he didn't stand out to me all that much which I guess for his type of game is a good thing. Seemed like a solid 2-way player that made smart, simple decisions with the puck. Not flashy by any means but did show some decent poise with the puck and on a few occasions made a few nice plays to create some room for himself. Skated pretty well, too. Not sure what to expect from him as I'm sure he needs another few years of development to see where he is at.

I wasn't as high on him as some were but he wasn't disappointing at all. Will need to fill out quite a bit to have a chance.

I was really impressed. He played one-on-ones flawlessly and stopped players in their tracks a few times. Could stand to be more physical, but he's no teddy bear along the boards. His skating isn't the greatest, but he passes well to begin the breakout. Reminded me of Brian Lee, in a good sense.

All I remembered was that NHL had him ranked 27 overall in European skaters, so if he played well it's not to surprising to me.

i was pretty impressed with him at the wjc. and he seemed to be on the ice for almost the entire ot(don't have the numbers so could be wrong, but pretty sure) until master zibby exchanged his toy puck for a gold medal.

he looked pretty mobile, confident, quick enough, with passing ability and defensively aware. of course being the age he is some size would help.

He was more of a defensive defenseman which I don't mind at all.

Looked like a solid two way defenceman to me, needs to fill out & bulk up.

Hopefully all of these Swedes develop well, so we can make Maclean's Swedish Five in a similar fashion to Bowman's Russian Five

Our europe scout Burda compared him to Volchenkov at the media scrum after the draft, and I liked what I saw from him during the WJC.
Played it simple and smart, hopefully the Volchenkov hits will come aswell

edit:
Not the player Volchenkov but more the playstyle that #28 plays, if my memory isnt fooling me. Haven't watched those interviews since summer.

Haha, I went to ELEMENTARY School just down the street from the Dirty Dollar. I think there's a reason they closed that school...

Does anyone know what they're building next to the Dollar? I drive by that section of Merivale every week, and I can't imagine anyone would think it would be a good business idea to open up next to the dirtiest strip joint in the city.

Someone should rename this thread "What's up with Claesson & Ottawa Peeler Clubs?"

I watched him a bit (I'll let you decide if that makes me informed). He was fairly impressive in both the Semi's and final. I made a point to watch both prospects on that team and while Z definitely stood out more, Claesson impressed me as well.

Not flashy at all, but sound positionally, I saw him maintain great spacing up and down the ice which really limited opportunities for the Fins and Russians (especially the Russians) to enter the offensive zone with speed and space. He played his man well in his own zone and I noticed no defensive gaps to his game. He's not the biggest looking guy on the team but he's young so that's not a big deal.

Made efficient accurate passes. Skates well enough. I think he just looks like a good solid player that won't be overly dynamic offensively but won't hurt either.

Watched him in a couple games. His positioning and strength were evident in his one on one play and defensive work along the boards. He snuffed out most offence that came his way, playing alot in th last couple minutes of games.

Good breakout passes as well. Could turn into a reliable NHL defencemen.

As one poster mentioned, they really leaned on him a lot in the gold medal game OT. I was like wait, he's STILL out there?
