Coyotes Claim Gilbert Brule

per Renaud Lavoie, the Coyotes have claimed Gilbert Brule off re-entry waivers. The Oilers and Coyotes will now split his salary for the remainder of the season.

I'd be curious if Edmonton was just doing this as a thank-you to Brule for being a good soldier? He was an asset for OKC and will be missed there.

I honestly think the Oilers thought he would clear waivers and re-join the team...though I could be completely wrong, just the feeling I got from their press release.

Haha. I posted like five minutes ago on the Yotes board that I hoped we wouldn't claim him. Here's to hoping he proves me wrong. Haha.

Phoenix owes him about 450k. Not bad.

That would be surprising to me. Why wouldn't some team claim Brule at half price with an expiring contract? Seeing how Phoenix is around 10th in waiver priority (well, 9th since Edmonton couldn't claim) I wonder how many teams in the lower two thirds put in claims.

I think this could be a good fit, PHX seems to do quite well with the reclamation projects.

Why did Buffalo pass on him?
Hope he does well with the Coyotes.

I think Edmonton only had 10 healthy forwards.

As a former 6th overall pick who has had injury after injury, someone is going to give him a chance just for the pedigree alone.

I wish him the best in Phoenix.

Edmonton didnt do this to help Brule find an NHL gig. They need his body right now and what it comes down to, they're paying him an NHL wage for playing in the AHL. So they either take the chance he clears or continue paying him to play in the AHL.

I'm having the same thoughts. To get a guy with speed who can plug a 4th line hole and send Adam down to kickstart him rather than having Luke rot with limited minutes? Easy. Not so in Regier World.

I completely overlooked PHX as a destination for Brule. Hes a psychologically fragile guy and playing for a semi-competitive team with little to no media or fan scrutiny and an always-sunny environment...I wouldn't be the least bit shocked if he put up 20-25 points over the remainder of the season if he's given some decent linemates and good zone starts (maybe even some PP time). I wish the guy nothing but the best, that's for sure.

at that price, i'd say that was a pretty good pick up for them.

It has been a tough ride for Brule and his pro career so far. He was such a vibrant player in junior. Unfortunately being through the meat grinder of two poorly run teams like Edmonton and Columbus really sucked the life out of his career. Just another example of why the draft system needs to be scrapped ASAP to prevent more of this in the future.

I knew he would not clear. Based upon tweets from on-line reporters there were about 10 teams that put claims in. This could blow up in the oilers face
