They would still count against the roster and cap.

Why?

He's a serviceable player with skill, a good shot and nice hands. As the 13th or 14th forward he's useful. He's not going to get a lot of games, but he's cheap, versatile and a decent backup.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to give him some conditioning in Hartford, so he'll be ready if we need him. Makes sense.

Maybe the Rangers are looking to showcase Wolski for a deal. This was a big year for him. He got hurt in camp. Now he can't crack the line-up. He can't be happy not playing when he has been healthy for the last 2-3 weeks.

NHL players must give their consent to conditioning assignments that can last up to 14 days. It’s no sure thing Wolski, who is on the final year of a contact under which he carries an annual $3.8 million cap hit, would agree, though Tortorella made it sound as though he has no immediate plan to get him into a game.

“I’m not going to force it,” the coach said when asked specifically about Wolski. “I’m not saying I
have to get him in.”

Wolski, who will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, could refuse and instead ask the Rangers to place him on waivers. It’s not known how general manager Glen Sather would respond to such a request.

WW will be a group II but he is not getting QOd at $4M which is his salary this season.
