Sather keeps Avery in limbo

Quote:
Sean Avery will remain a member of the AHL Whale for the time being despite the fact the Rangers have been asked by a NHL club to place the exiled winger on re-entry waivers, The Post has learned.

Sources have told The Post general manager Glen Sather rejected that request, instead offering to trade Avery in a minor-league deal under which the Rangers would take back additional dollars but the responsibility for placing Avery on re-entry would then pass to the acquiring club that also would then bear the burden of carrying dead cap space upon a claim.

The Post has learned there is at least one other club also prepared to claim Avery, who cleared waivers on Dec. 30 and was thereafter assigned to Connecticut for the second time this season, if the Blueshirts place him on re-entry.

When Sather was asked yesterday by The Post if the Rangers would agree to put Avery through the re-entry process, the GM replied via email: “Not now.”

Its too costly for the Rangers to lose Avery on re-entry.

Wonder which team the Rangers might trade Avery to for their bad contract(s)in the AHL?

Yeah, no. Hope we don't get stuck with dead space.

Curious to see what team wants him. Personally I can't stand Avery in any capacity, I'd rather see him float around in some other organization than ours.

Brooks brought the possibility of Avery going to cash poor team for their bad one way contract and then that team puts Avery on re-entry and the Rangers send the acquiring player(s)to the AHL or they are already in the AHL?

Doesn't it depend on the players? We don't know who the other team is

Why didn't this (idiot) club claim him the first time he was put on re-entry waivers? Send us an AHL'er if they're serious, otherwise this is just more talk and no action.

So wouldn't this mean Avery is never playing another game as a Ranger?

This mysterious club could've claimed him on December 30th as well. Or dealt a minor leaguer for him. I just don't like Brooks' making it seem like the Rangers are at fault here for no one else wanting to pick this guy up and now, all of a sudden, there's a team that wants him for nothing when they could've had the him 3 times already.

I hope he gets back into the NHL and gets a shot. He deserves it. But this "other team" is puzzling.

Well yes, but I think that much was made clear already. The team is healthy, there is no room for him and his contract is up at the end of the year. His Rangers' career is over. They have no problem with him moving on to another team but they are not going to absorb dead cap space so he can do so. If they put him on re-entry and he gets claimed, they are on the books for half his remaining cap hit. Not happening.

It's not puzzling. The mysterious team wants him on re-entry, or half price. Possibly because they are close to the cap. If they claimed him on Dec 30th, they would've been on the hook for the full remaining cap hit this season. Avery was available on re-entry back on Halloween, but the mystery team obviously did not have a need for him then.

Rangers would love to trade him, but nobody wants the full remaining cap hit. And the Rangers aren't adding dead money to the cap by putting him on re-entry so he can be claimed. They have no problem paying him to play in CT. He can go elsewhere, but not if it adds anything to our cap.

If there is a mysterious team, it is 100% the Islanders

I'm not so sure of that. But I wouldn't doubt they would be interested in acquiring Avery so they can put him on re-entry and take on the cap hit to keep them at the cap floor.

So the Rangers are circumventing the salary cap. Got it.

How is that the case? He's not playing for us regardless, why would we take on a 1.9M cap hit for no reason? Believe me, Sather has no problem keeping guys in the minors who don't play to their contracts. Kasper, Redden, Avery.

I don't think it's about the cap floor. Similar to guys like York, Parenteau, Dunham and Poti, they seem to love guys who can't hack it with the Rangers. Avery would give them a nice boost and half the time that team looks lifeless anyway. Who else would want a guy like Avery?

Possibilities. Teams with bad contracts in the AHL. One way contracts. Which team did Sather suggest a team instead of placing Avery on re-entry with the Rangers taking on additional dollars?

Brooks mentioned AHL players on one way contracts. The Islanders don't have AHL players on one way contracts.

The Rangers aren't obligated to place Avery on re-entry. Avery cleared waivers and was assigned to the AHL. No circumvention.

I like Avery, but NO WAY should the Rangers take on an additional $1 mill. in cap space just so he can play in the NHL this year. They are only ~ $1 mill. under the cap as it is. It would be idiotic.

Brooks suggestion about trading Avery to a cash poor team and that team put Avery on re-entry waivers has one flaw. What happens if Avery clears re-entry? The acquiring team is stuck with him. They trade a bigger contract to the Rangers which the Rangers assign to the AHL. Avery would have a $418,919 cap hit on trade deadline day. The acquiring team saves cash by sending their bad contract to the Rangers for Avery. If their motivation is to shed further money by losing Avery on re-entry and they don't,they're stuck with Avery until the end of the season.

Avery would be a good fit on Vancouver. He is a better player than most of their 3rd and 4th liners. Veteran team with good leadership. The Rangers take on Reinprecht. Vancouver would take a $200,000 hit if Avery is claimed on re-entry. Make the trade on 2/25-2/26.

Avery for Reinprecht. Rangers take on the additional salary

Just leave him in Hartford until his contract expires.

If he's unhappy he can breach his contract and leave/refuse to report.
