Mystery Team Wants Avery on Re-Entry; Sather Refuses (For Now)
I'd love to see Avery back in the NHL. He is clearly an NHL-caliber player. If not for his perceived (and history of) off-ice issues, he'd easily be on an NHL team's roster. I am in the minority, but I wouldn't mind seeing him on the 4th line for the Flyers. A line of Avery - Couturier - Talbot would be tough to play against and could pot some goals as well.
Mystery teams asks for avery to go on re-entry waivers.. Sather says "not now"
Title and description
As a Sens fan I would not mind this in all honesty. We need the youth build without giving up assets for the draft. Kaspars Daugavins is not really working on the wing that well, and would still need to aquire a defenceman.
No, he just doesn't want the Rangers to be on the hook for half of the cap hit. The Rangers don't have to get rid of Avery, and any team that wanted him could have taken him off waivers 3 times already this season.
Sather just isn't going to do teams favors when it comes to eating cap hit on re-entry waivers. It is said that that he'd trade contracts with a team though if they really want Avery (take on some other teams unwanted contract in exchange, etc)
Sources have told The Post general manager Glen Sather rejected that request, instead offering to trade Avery in a minor-league deal under which the Rangers would take back additional dollars but the responsibility for placing Avery on re-entry would then pass to the acquiring club that would then bear the burden of carrying dead salary-cap space upon a claim.
Quote:
Sather’s willingness to acquire AHL players on one-way contracts who would then be assigned to the Whale creates the possibility of a cash-poor club with ample salary-cap space making such an exchange with the Rangers, knowing that Avery would be claimed on re-entry.
That was my thought as well. Simply because we have so many guys injured right now. I hate Avery, but wouldn't be opposed to bringing him in for free. If Slats wants an asset for him though, he can pound sand.
So, what this also means is Sather is definitely looking to add some salary if he needs the cap-space that part of Avery's salary would tie up. Very interesting stuff.
The best bet for pulling a deal off is probably the Carolina Hurricanes, as they are in the Bottom 6 in the league for salary and will likely be selling off Bryan Allen, Tim Gleason and Tuomo Ruutu for picks and prospects.
So. hypothetically, something like
To Carolina: Sean Avery
To NY Rangers: Cedric McNicoll
Then Carolina recalls Avery, he's claimed by the team who wants Rangers to bring him up, and Carolina get a little artificial bump to their cap-space, and Rangers put McNicoll in the AHL, and in June, simply don't qualify him. Pretty clever stuff by Sather, if true.

Don't think he wants an asset, just doesn't want to be saddled with a cap hit. Some team is basically saying "yeah man don't worry about having to pay half his salary and deal with half his cap hit, we really want him!"

Agreed, could be the oilers, especially since they just shed Brule.
Teams like the oilers and pens that are decimated with injuries. Oilers just dumped Brule.
I'd be shocked if we took Avery, unless ST has been given the go ahead to talk to Avery. He just doesn't seem to be one of those guys that fits the attitude mold that ST wants on this club.
With that being said Avery has to be getting to the point where he'll be a good soldier just to play in the NHL.
Would the Oilers really want him around there younger guys. He isn't exactly a classy player. Watching that oil change show they were talking about somebody that they had interest in but weren't sure about that person around "there boys". That leads me to believe that its not the Oilers.
