Ruutu is better defensively now than he was with the Hawks, but that's not saying a whole lot. He's a crowd pleaser. He makes big hits to get the crowd and the team going, and can play well enough to do so in a complimentary top-six role. But at the same time, he's not really a puck fighter. He's not an Andrew Ladd, he's a Mark Bell. He lacks that "playoff attitude" that teams like the Wings (and the Hawks should) seek.
How the **** do you KNOW this? He's been in the playoffs once!
People used one career playoff round to justify and play up Frolik and his worth. Same with Ben Smith. You can't turn around and argue against doing the same with a guy to show his lack of playoff worth. It doesn't go both ways. And I'm not singling any people out here, just saying in general, you can't have it both ways. I'm not arguing for or against any of this, but did feel the need to point that out.
I know it's not the NHL playoffs, but it was the his internation play with Finland that got everyone going about him being "the best player not in the NHL". The disappointment runs deep with Ruutu because he was the first legit prospect this team had in 10 years, but if you ignore all of that, he's a good player with a good resume. A small part of a teams success but nevertheless a positive one who brings attributes that the roster doesn't have in spades.
Fair point on Buff, but we did know going in that he had a, shall we say, "special connection" with Luongo. Not every player needs to be a nose-to-the-grindstone playoff performer, but it is an area that the Hawks were strong in in 2010 and are weak in today.
My point is more that there are better options out there at forwards to suit the team's needs
last WC and the year before that...
+ most of the time the games are not evening for you guys, so it's more than possible that you are at work when these games take place.

In what way does Cullen help us more than Ruutu? Cullen is done, and I wouldn't take him over Pirri or Krüger. I'd rather try my luck with them and go after a hard hitting player that would give us secondary scoring
