Beauty of a hit. Hope Kopi is ok, though.

Okay folks, I just slaughtered half of the thread up to this point just because a lot of it trickled into trivial griping and complaining, which then went into personal shots at each other.

This thread is about Brendan Morrow's hit on Anze Kopitar. This thread is not about calling each other out and causing off-topic issues.

Get it? Got it? Good!

Carry on with the on-topic conversation!

I think the awkwardness of the hit is why Kopitar ended up landing the way he did. I hope he's ok. I think the instigator call was ******** on Richards though.

Or is it about the hit by Brenden Morrow?

The instigator is pretty classic, and they were calling that type of thing all night, taking the first guy to start a scrum (Souray and Benn both got solo minors for shoving in scrums early in the game). It's the only reason it didn't get nastier than it did at the end.

Clean hit, but Kopitar's neck will surely be hurting tomorrow. Hope he's okay.

Kopitar has to be aware when a guy like Morrow is on the ice.

LaRue and O'Halloran lost this game way before Benn and Souray got penalties. They did a poor job early and it caused problems later in the game. Both teams benefited from their awful penalty calls.

Beauty hit. Unfortunate result for Kopitar, particularly how he landed into the boards.

As a Stars fan, I'm totally fine with Richards trying to stick up for Kopitar. Yes, it's a clean hit but as a player I'm sure it's difficult to gauge that in the heat of the moment.

Clean check but I sincerely hope that Kopitar is ok.

Kings coach Darryl Sutter told reporters he believed Kopitar only suffered a bloody nose.

"You know what guys, it's half an hour after the game and I'm not the doctor and I'm not Kopitar,'' Sutter said. ``That's all I can tell you right now. He told me he's fine, so we'll see what that means."

Morrow said he is hoping for the best for both sides.
I have great respect that Morrow and Gulutzan are both concerned about Kopitar's condition. Hopefully it was just a bloody nose.

The instigator rule is too open for interpretation to be effective. Some nights you will see obvious instigations like this penalized with just a 2 minute roughing call plus the major for fighting, without the misconduct and potential visor issues or mandatory suspensions for tilts in the last 5 of a game.

In the Kings last game, Willie Mitchell laid out Joel Ward (IIRC), and Chimera left his position to clearly start a fight, and only got the roughing call and not the instigator - it was the exact same situation. Hell, some nights you will see refs just give Richards and Morrow double minors for roughing, which might have been the more deserving call since neither guy was really trying to fight the other all that much.

If you go by the book, that was clearly an instigation. It's a shame that the book is only gone by in certain situations. In this case Dallas earned a 4 minute PP and tied the game. It was a factor in a 3 point swing.

Lots of things were a factor in the three-point swing, including an incorrect puck over the glass penalty that led to the Kings 5-on-3 (replays clearly showed the puck deflected off a player's leg on the way out). The key is that neither team was able to make a key kill, the Stars on the 5-on-3 or the 5-on-4 goal that later gave the Kings the lead or the Kings on the double-minor.

The instigator was correct, and the officials signaled early in the game they were going to give the extra minors to guys who started scrums after the whistle. This was the only scrum that turned into a full-scale fight, which is why it was the only instigator awarded.

All that said, I do understand and have empathy for why Richards did what he did, though if he was thinking clearly and not just seeing red he would have ripped off the helmet on the way to avoid the instigating with a visor rule.

...on a perfectly clean hit? You may as well start a fight over the other team scoring a goal, or any other legal play.

Look at it from Morrow's perspective.. He hit a guy with the puck cleanly; why should he have to fight? It's not his fault Kopitar was mesmerized by the puck..

IMO, 5 to Morrow, 5+2 to Richards. You can't let a guy start a fight over a completely clean play just because Kopitar hurt himself.

Great, clean hit. You don't see too many dirty hits from Morrow.

Good, clean hit. Just a hard one, and injuries happen from those I guess.

I have zero problem with the hit or morrow. Richards didn't think and did what he had to do, or should do in that moment. Costed us the game but im fine with it.

Ok, I think we've established at this point that the hit was clean....

The question now becomes, if Kopitar is to miss any significant time (I think it's safe to say we all hope that's not the case), how does his absence impact the team's playoff hopes? This is probably more a question for Kings fans; do you think they have the depth (more importantly scoring depth) to make up for Kopitar's production if he does miss time?

There's no question that the Kings are a playoff caliber team. It'd be a shame to see them on the outside looking in because of a few key injuries throughout the season.

Deserved penalties on Richards for starting a fight after a perfect hit.

Sucks for Kopitar. Shoulder to shoulder, not into the boards, he has the puck, hits him head on, glides into him so no charging. Massive hit, but clean.

This is exactly the type of play where Kopitar has to realize what is going on around him. Come around the net with your head down and you will get nailed eventually.

clean hit, Kopitar needs to be better prepared to take the hit. He wouldn't have been ragdolled nearly as bad.
