Wow, didn't see that coming.

Esposito's been traded, what, 4 times now? 5? And he still hasn't made his NHL debut.

Not ideal for a guy who was once the consensus top pick in the 2007 draft before sliding, big time.

I guess GMJN's taking on another "project"....hopefully this one pays off.

I don't expect anything to come out of either of those players, so w/e.

I wouldn't assume Nieuwendyk has anything more in mind than a minor league deal. Unfortunately for Esposito, he's had a couple serious ACL injuries which have derailed his career. And as you noted, even before the injuries, his stock was already on the decline.

Anybody know about each player's contract status? Maybe Esposito's deal is up sooner than Roman's and will be one fewer players under contract? In any case this seems like the definition of a minor deal.

But then why even bother, if he's not planning on doing anything with him?

Did he owe Tallon a favour, offering to ship out a perfectly healthy prospect for one who's regressed horribly since his pre-draft days and has faced numerous health issues?

I'd like to think Joe sees at least something in his new addition to the franchise.

Either that or he's got some unknown grudge against Ondrej Roman.

Both RFAs next year, Esposito makes 65k at the AHL level and Roman makes 60k at the AHL level. Probably trying to bolster center depth in the entire organization by picking up Esposito.

Roman will just end up back in the czech republic next year so I wouldn't cry about it.

Esposito is a whole lot of nothing though. His stats have gotten progressively worse every single year and now he's just barely a marginal AHL player.

The only thing noteworthy about this trade is that it seems to indicate that Nieuwendyk has a good working relationship with Tallon.

Perhaps it was part of "future considerations" from the Barch trade earlier in the year?

I don't think that trade had any future considerations component. That was the Nystrom deal.

Esposito did have some upside if he can find it again, whereas I don't think Roman was ever going to become anything here. I don't mind the risk.

There's a higher chance that Roman plays in the NHL. Lower line potential combined with the fact that it's Florida.

I'm still happy with the trade. Esposito has a higher upside.

I dont think Roman has any potential as a lower line player. He was either going to develop enough to be a 2nd liner or he was worthless, imo.

I meant more like a Brunnstrom on DET. Not a gritty, crash/banger type. I suppose when you think about it, Espo and him are in quite similar positions just one has a pedigree.

Nieuwendyk and Tallon are old friends.
