Wouldn't be surprised to see a buy out of his current contract and a resigning of 1 year around $4mil for Alf.

Old man's still going hard.

You can't buy out a contract and re-sign the player for at least a year. Unfortunately Alfie will make only $1 million in salary (I think) whether he plays or not.

Its always depended on his health. If he can stay healthy the rest of this season then next season is a definite possibility.

I've been telling everyone that this is not Alfredsson's last year.

Alfredsson has just put realistic or maybe conservative expectations but deep down we all knew he was coming back.

Hopefully no injuries are bound to Alfredsson for another season and half.

If Ottawa does make playoffs and make some big noise, I fully expect Murray to acquire a game-changer ala Suter or Parise for a more serious run the year after.

I can't imagine this is Alfie's last year. Since the season has been accelerated I thought Murray would kind of let this season slide but put in enough action at the deadline to make the team a legitimate threat while still positioning the team for the following season. NEXT season I would expect him to go all in and bring Alfie, and Ottawa, another shot at the cup.

I'm expecting Murray to have plans for who he thinks he can assemble, if he doesn't have enough already, to get a shot at the cup, and I expect him to have contingency plans if that player(s) is not available which could be for various reasons. I sincerely doubt this is Alfie's last season and I think next season he'll be hoisting a cup courtesy of Murray.

Pretty sure that's false. Ottawa bought him out of his last contract in order to sign this current one... Unless this is a 35+ contract thing.

If he stays healthy through the season I could see him putting in another year. I'll be honest, he's exceeded my expectations thus far.

That was due to the new CBA, as Alfie's contract had option years IIRC.

Those are now banned in the new CBA, so his contract was bought out in order to re-sign with Ottawa. If Alfie wants to be an Ottawa Senator next year, he will theoretically make $1 000 000, if you don't count the $3 000 000 mysteriously wired into his account from an unknown Eugene Smelnyk.

Ok, I was thinking the same thing as DW. Never heard they got rid of that.

I'm sure Alfie will be taken care of.

I'm pretty sure that stipulation only applied to the amnesty buyouts coming out of the lockout. I dont think there is anything preventing us from buying him out and then immediately re-signing him.

I doubt it's even a salary issue for Alfredsson, just his health and ability to contribute to the team.

He'll play next year.

Our team will be much better with the addition of Silfverberg and Zibanejad. Turris, Cowen and Karlsson will be more experienced, and Maclean's system will be fully integrated. I see us contending for the cup next season, and I'm sure Alfie feels the same way.

I always wondered what would be stopping Eugene from signing him to insane money for a management job once his playing career is over, or just having him a cheque in a few years...

We can do it, we can win the cup next year.

We'll have more older prospects arriving and we can add an UFA this offseason. Why not? Let's just win the cup with Alfie.

I'm not sure exactly how it works but any transactions between a player and owner that aren't "market value" can be seen as cap tampering.

Pretty sure Mario almost got in trouble for buying Crosby's house for like, 100 k more than Sid payed.

Then again I'm the furthest thing from a cap expert so someone with more knowledge would be appreciated!

i think the alfie retirement question was only relevant while he was having back problems and no fun (clouston). those problems are gone now.

He is on pace for close to 70 points - it would be crazy for him to retire now!
