How are we supposed to know? It's possible, but let's see how he produces at first. So far he has produced one 45 point season and is on pace for a 55 point season. That's by far the most we've seen from any player the Rangers have had in some time that is still on an entry level contract.
Let's compare Stepan to recent players on the Rangers.
Dubinsky's ELC expired and he signed a 2 year $1,850,000 contract.
Callahan's ELC expired and he signed a 2 year $2,300,000 contract.
Anisimov's ELC expired and he signed a 2 year $1,875,000 contract.
Of the 3 players mentioned, only Callahan was eligible for arbitration, thus making him the highest paid of the 3 players mentioned.
In 3 seasons, Callahan produced 59 points 147 NHL games.
In 3 seasons, Dubinsky produced 81 points in 170 NHL games.
In 3 seasons, Anisimov produced 72 points in 165 NHL games.
Continuing the logic that Stepan will hit 55 points this season, 10 more than last season, let's assume he continues on pace for a 10 point increase. Let's also assume Stepan does not suffer any injuries this season or next.
Stepan will have produced 165 points in 246 NHL games. While that is the most games any of the 3 mentioned players, it's also the highest production in total and season by season.
Stepan's worth can be approximated from anywhere from $3,000,000 to $4,500,000. That's if his ELC expires. Sather can probably get away with a cheaper deal if he signs him after this season. Let's see how things work out first. If Stepan stays on his current production or if it jumps, teams might take interest, but his value will go up. I wouldn't be surprised if Stepan got extended, but if he does get extended, I assume it will be mid next season.
