I'll never forget the insane amount of *****ing from a certain segment of posters here about Koivu and his "massive" overpayment of $4.25m

Can people stop talking about Saku Koivu?

It's 2012 FFS.

1st post about Koivu ever, why so sensitive?
Cause he'd still be top point getter on the habs?

You know who would be a top point getter in the habs? Michael Ryder and Mike Ribeiro

Besides, there's no Teemu Selanne in this team.

The "Gomez Event"

* Koivu replaced with Gomez

"Optimistic" Fans - Hell yes! Gomez will be awesome on our first line, him and Gionta go way back and Cammalleri singed here to play with him! Finally a 1st line centre!

Realistic Fans - Gomez has been garbage for ages and is arguably the worst contract in the league. Ranger fans wanted this guy gone for nothing.

"Optimistic" Fans - He is better than Koivu who was just a glorified 2nd line C, No one wanted to play with him but Gionta and Cammalleri want to play with Gomez.

Realistic Fans - We got ****ed.

*Gomez sucks

"Optimistic" Fans - Well Gomez will turn it on in the playoffs, right now he is playing injured and his wingers are dragging him down.

Realistic fans - Koivu has more points, playing less minutes with rookie wingers and he makes half as much. Should have kept him.

"Optimistic" Fans - QUIT LIVING IN THE PAST!

I agree with this. Another stupid move by the management team of the Habs. I just don't get it anymore. How PG has a job at this point just shows that Molson is totally out of loop with what the NHL brings today.

Realistic fans missed the point of letting Koivu go, sadly.

I'm sure that when the "optimistic fans" run Plecks out of town for being a 2a center to be replace a la Carter / Vinny they will say stop living in the past to anyone who calls them on it too.

If there is one change that's needed it's to move the medical staff into the 21st century. Every year it's a pile of injuries and guys come back and still look injured or get re injured, then we have White and Markov missing almost all year with injuries that should have not kept them out so long.

Where we these realistic fans during our Cup run??? NOWHERE. The "rationals" are coming out of the woodwork and pretending as if they thought this was their opinion throughout the course of those players' tenures here.

You do understand that the players who left, Koivu, Ribeiro, whoever, played on other teams with different structures and linemates. Ribeiro was so selfish here. In Dallas he changed his game because he was not going to get mollycoddled. Also, I to this day would not want to see Ribs in our top 6. I LOVE Saku, but I have a hard time believing that him playing a dual role with Pleky would be any better than where we are now. DD is emerging as one of the great small playmakers and into a very similar mould as Koivu. It will take time (and Koivu could also score, not DD's forte). Koivu will retire soon. DD is here probably for a long stretch. We talk about developing our players. This has been a good season for that.

I'm not saying I wanted Koivu out. I really didn't. But this whole realistic fans stuff is not accurate at all. You're using hindsight. If you can show me posts from when the deal was made (aside from what we had to give up, which is my only gripe) that Gomez would suck here, I'd like to see them. I'm glad Koivu is doing well elsewhere with said rookies, but there was no guarantee he was going to do that with Gionta and whoever else Gomez has been used with. The Gomez-Gionta-Patches line was actually a very good one until "the hit".

FTR only a few people ragged on Koivu and said he was a glorified 2nd line center (which btw is more his role in Anaheim). He's not carrying the team, he has support. Also, didn't know anaheim was doing so well this year. We all loved Koivu for what he brought to this team, and I re-iterate, I was very sad to see him leave, but it was part of a process and one that is still in transition. I think I'm trying to be realistic and you're using one player vs player and not seeing the entire landscape. Gomez has to perform better, no doubt, but he's not incapable of it, in fact it's expected of him. That's why the deal was done. Can't control what the player does on the ice. Cole COULD have been a bust after what happened in edmonton. That's what the so called rational people said at the start and after his not so great first dozen games. Look at him now.

I loved Koivu too. But they had an opportunity for a fresh start at went with it. New leadership, new core, new look. You don't get a new girlfriend and go hanging out with all of her and your new friends... and bring your old girlfriend along to sit in the corner byherself, do you?

It almost kinda sorted maybe worked for a bit. Injuries and other problems led to it crumbling away. If Markov were healthy in the playoffs against the Flyers maybe we move on to the cup finals and Gainey is called a genius today. Cole was probably the other missing piece that was added a year too late. Now that core is weeding its way out as young players develop. Gauthier will try hard to use Cammalleri and Gomez's dollars on something new. It appears this time he'll be looking for size and skill together. We'll see if he gets the opportunity to fish another free agent market, he may not.
