If you’re a team in the hunt for van Riemsdyk, you also have to know his hip is sore enough he’ll likely need surgery in the off-season and he’s also had an abdominal muscle tear this season. He’s also got 5-1/2 years left on a $25.5-million deal.

The team denied initial reports surrounding specific injuries to the hip. That was in late December. There was speculation prior to that which included the term "cam impingement." JVR refused commentary at one point beyond the phrase "slippery slope." Yesterday, this was among the more recent comments:

This is also the latest in a series of injuries this season for Van Riemsdyk, including a muscular tear in his abdominal region, a chronic hip injury that could require surgery in the offseason and a brief knee problem.

When Van Riemsdyk was hurt earlier this season, and was absent from the lineup, Holmgren said it happened during a non-contact play. That leads to the assumption of what was posted above.

That being the first hit is confirmed. I saw it at the time and wondered why, if not penalty was called, the league still wasn't looking at it. It was cheapshot elbow exactly the same as Bourque got 5 games for.

Then they let JVR back on the ice. Now we find out he got hit again and is suffering from a concussion, after what was the 2nd hit.

Teams need to really start to monitor this stuff. The quiet room can't be a joke.

The first shot left him lying on the ice, Denis Potvin's bullcrap accusation that he was embellishing notwithstanding.

In retrospect, he should have been out that game and evaluated as the next hit has put him out of the lineup for who knows how long. Pity.
