Gomez is gone! He will not be a Hab next year. The new CBA will probably have an amnesty clause to buy a player out without counting on the cap. Either that or Molson will bury the contract. Yes its expensive, but you cant bring in a new GM and coach and say here you go, Gomez is on your team regardless. A new GM will need the cap flexibility of that 7.5 million. Gomez is as good as done.

They ought to give him an opportunity to shine and have glory.

In 2004-05 (during the lockout), Gomez played for his home town Alaska Aces. He was named the ECHL MVP, but his team lost in round 1 of the playoffs.

This season, the Aces look to be the class of the ECHL. Give Scotty a chance to rebuild his confidence on a Championship team instead of taking valuable player development ice time in Hamilton.

This move wouldn't be without precedent. The Carolina Hurricanes sent goalie Arturs Irbe to the ECHL Johnstown Chiefs in 2003-04 after they decided that he was finished and would never again play in the NHL (which he didn't).

This move would also send a very strong message to current Canadien players that the team is willing to take drastic action with its non performers with whom the team is saddled with big money, long term contracts.

this with his play of late gomez may be claimed if put on waivers

Gomez will not be traded and he won't be claimed by another team on re-entry waivers. The next CBA rules will dictate wether he his bought out or demoted. I expect Gomez's cap hit to be $0 next season.

Im really hoping other posters are right in Molsons willingness to bury Gomezs last 2 years of contract in the AHL and eat the loss, but Im not 100%. I remember before Gillett that the team was pretty keen on the bottom line. I was surprised Gillett was much more willing to take a loss to have a better team.

If Gauthier is set on burrieng him in the minors, h could jus tell Molson that's it's the exact same cash that we had to spend for nothing on Markov except it doesn't count against the cap and it's 250000$ cheaper.

5.5 is 1 mil cheaper than what the Rangers have to pay for Redden...

Habs should have tried to get Gaborik instead of Gomez. Horrible decision making by Bob. Now you ave to live with it.

I wonder what would be the impact within the team if they just "dump" Gomez to the minors. Sounds like he's definitely a favourite amongst the players, especially the young ones. Also, is there anyone that the Habs could realistically get with the $7.3 million that would have a huge impact next year? He might be more tradeable next year in the final year than this one.

Why on earth Gaborik would've wanted to come here?

I think all the players expecting new contracts this summer will cry their way to the bank with Gomez gone.

Nope, since his 2nd surgery, no insurrance company will insure Markov, it's 100% on Habs profits.
