Franson almost becoming "Untouchable"

Listening to Blue Breakfast on TSN 1050 this morning and Dreger had a talk with Burke before the Sabres game last week. Burke said that Dion was the only untouchable player on the blueline but also said that Cody Franson is almost at that status as well. I will post the link to the interview when they post it on TSN.

Move the thread if necessary. Thought it was a pretty good discussion to start.

Its the Mike Richards Show Blue Breakfast with Dreger and Simmons if you want to listen to it

Highly doubt he feels this way about Franson. More than likely this is an attempt at driving his price up or increasing bargaining power.

Very interesting.

Franson has impressed the hell out of me since training camp, and I was pretty vocal about it on here.

He does a lot of under-appreciated things on the ice that really helps the play of the team.

I am glad, I think he has made gunarsson expendable more than people think although I LOVE Gunnarsson. He's been slowly putting it together and lay out hits which has been giving me great hope for this guy to be someone special for us.

Surprised about Schenn not mentioned though.

I can believe it. He's:

1. Smooth skating, although not exactly speedy.
2. Makes fantastic outlet passes, and is able to move the puck out of the zone himself.
3. Excellent puck clearing, something we've struggled with for some reason.
4. Now becoming quite physical.
5. A dynamo in the offensive zone, able to keep the puck in like no one else.
6. Has the best damn shot on the team.

Why wouldn't he be untouchable? The little things he does are turning him into one of my favourites. Honestly hope he's here for years to come.

He has contributed so much that he may have moved Schenn out of the "untouchable" class, thus opening a window for Burke to do what was recently unthinkable, to move Schenn as a major piece in a deal for that #1C.

If there is any opportunity to nab Eric Staal, I think Burke has the pieces to do so. By burying Lombardi and trading Schenn as one of the pieces for Staal, along with remaining cap space available, Staal's cap hit is manageable.

Go for it Burke!

Love Franson's game. He's not nearly As soft as he was advertised to be, and his shot is extremely accurate

I think this is what has surprised me. Including me who has probably been his harshest critic around.

Not sure I believe Burkey on this, let's just say he's been known to work the media before.

That said, I've been very happy with Franson....I still cant believe Nashville gave him to us for Lebda.

I've said this before, he's arguably our best D.

Just wondering if anyone else may see this but I think Holzer plays similarly to Franson with less offensive instincts. I haven't seen enough of Holzer though to make a fair judgement.

Everyone is overlooking the obvious, you can't teach a player to be 6' 5".

Always liked Franson and I'm glad his games starting to come around in T.O.

Guy always turns out to be a beast in NHL12 for me.

He had a bad game against Boston and I'll admit it, I jumped on the wagon to ship him out. But you know what, for me he has been on of our most reliable defencemen behind Gunnar. He makes a great, great crisp first pass out of the zone, makes the smart play to get the puck out of the zone if there's nothing there and he has a cannon that he can t-off in a matter of a second.

I really think he will be a Leaf for a long time.

I like Franson but this is going way over the top .

Who knows what Burkes trying to spin now . Maybe he's pimping him to spin Schenn or another D as expendable .

If we drop another game or two i can see Burke making a deal to try to get us into the playoffs and save Ronnie's job .

Good. He's our only good right handed shot on our blueline and has played very well defensively so we shouldn't trade him. Just pair him with a good defensive guy who doesn't pinch and he's all good.

We have a pretty good young defensive core or Phaneuf, Gunnar, Schenn, Gardiner and Franson.

Holzer is a defensive player he never had that offensive instinct i think you might be confused with Juraj Mikus, who was expected to be a good top 4 contributor.

Not a keeper IMO. He plays a similar game to Schenn but not as well. If you look at the others, each have their own unique strength not paralleled by another. IMO our D needs to be rounded out by a pure PMD.... a younger Liles.

He's Muhammad Aulie, I would say that's a unique strength.

From a cap standpoint, Gunnar, Franson, Aulie are more valuable than Liles, Schenn, or Komi.

Franson will get a bump next year as a RFA, and if his agent is reasonable he will be paid less than Luke will be, making him a good cap hit. Don Meehan's negotiations with the Leafs were well documentated this summer. It can be argued if he is indeed worth 3.6m for 5 years. Not a contract that will cripple a deal but maybe too rich for the Leafs moving fwd with Dion and Komi(unless he is moved) and Liles in limbo for next year.

Gunnar, Franson and Aulie should not command as much as Liles, Komi or Schenn and considering Gunnar and Franson have played as well as they have this year with a cap hit of only 2.1M. They are safer from being moved than the latter players mentioned.

Another aspect to consider is Jesse Blacker and Lashoff(when healthy) next year, add bigger than he looks in person Holzer and Leafs are well covered.
