Deals With Hawks Revisited

Don't look now but very quietly, former Leaf 2nd rounder from 2008 Jimmy Hayes has been called up & has had a very good start to his NHL career.

GP:9 GOALS: 3. ASSISTS: 2. POINTS: 5.

We traded Jimmy (the last draft Burkie was NOT at the helm for) for the pick we used to select Brad Ross.

Also, Stalberg is having a fairly decent season & as of late & is playing on the Hawks top line with Toews & Kane. Along w/ PAradis ( a minus player in 31 games with 9 points) & DiDomenico ( has played more games in the ECHL this year than AHL) was what we traded to get Versteeg.

Versteeg was then traded for the pick we used to to send to Anaheim in order to select Tyler Biggs or could have been Stuart Percy.

Looking back, what do you think of the trades? We may have overpaid a little in what we end up getting back for Versteeg but what are yer thoughts?

A lot riding on Brad Ross to be the player they hope he was going to be. Is the consensus that he will be?

Also Tyler & Stu Percy - works in progress fer sure.

Was it a good trade when we made it? Yes.

We brought in a 50-point, 20-goal scorer who never received significant TOI.

So, asking 60-points from him wasn't a lot - but no one could predict how badly he wouldn't gel with the team.

Stalberg is Jason Blake 2.0, Blake eventually scores goals too - but not before missing many opportunities, and taking chances away from teammates.

I didn't know much about Hayes, and still don't, but good on him.

I expect Ross and Biggs will be a large part of this franchise in the future.

Hayes was dealt as a throw-in in the deal so we could secure Sweatt.

Hayes wanted to play with his brother who was a part of the Hawks organization, and the Hawks couldn't sign Sweatt.

Burke thought he would be able to ink Sweatt who would have been a bottom 6 player with lots of speed and some skill.

Problem is, that Sweatt decided he wouldn't sign so he could sign with Vancouver, so he too, could be with his brother.

Then Burke signed Mueller.

So essentially, in an indirect way Hayes became Mueller. Mueller has nice size and is progressing well with the Marlies.

Can't say for a few years, Biggs is at least 2 years away and probably 3 because I've read that he wants to finish his degree. Ross is also likely a few years away, he's been good this year in the WHL but I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the Marlies next year and maybe get a game or two in the NHL.

I knew someone would make a thread about the trade when Stalberg got the 2nd star of the week.

Quote:
We traded Jimmy (the last draft Burkie was NOT at the helm for) for the pick we used to select Brad Ross.
Burke did trade Hayes for the pick that was used for Ross. It was a one for one trade, nothing more nothing less.

Quote:

Hayes was not thrown in the Sweatt deal. Sweatt was traded to Toronto with Versteeg in the trade with Chicago. Hayes was traded for a 2nd round pick used to draft Brad Ross. Mueller was indeed signed instead of Sweatt, but it has no link at all to Hayes.

Anyway, the Versteeg in Florida is the one the Leafs were hoping to get but it simply didn't work out. Some trades go like that. The Leafs did a good job to recuperate some futures while Versteeg was highly sought after because of his cup experience.

We'll see how Biggs works out.

The Steeg deal didn't work out for us as we would have liked but it was a decent gamble . VS is on pace for 25g 50 p in only 13 + mins . Good for him for developing into a solid player . Hawks posters are really happy with his play this year .

I never really understood the Hayes deal . Why trade a 6-6 guy with some skill for a pick when you're just going to use it to select a potential 3rd line agitator .

I used to watch Hayes play at Boston College last year (with this brother) and at times he looked like a beast. Great shot and will get into the dirty areas but that was in a college. Big difference in the pro ranks.

He's a big kid but soft.

We still need to wait on Ross, but it was a kind of lateral move to move a prospect with upside for a younger prospect with upside. Hayes had some hype in 2007 as a potential top 10 pick for 2008, so there was always some potential there for good things.

I liked Hayes as a prospect, so I was a bit disappointed at moving him.

I hope Ross pans out, but both he and Hayes are question marks at this point.

And he is painfully slow. This kid doesn't turn out to be more than an Anthony Stewart-type player with less physicality.

Hayes was traded pretty much as a favour to the scouting department.

Burke said many times he didn't want all their hard work to go to waste. The Leafs didn't have a 1st or 2nd rounder that year so he traded Hayes to get one and they selected Ross.

Biggs has the highest upside of them all, including Versteeg. If he reaches it, WATCH OUT. He'll be a beast on this team. No one will be taking liberties with our stars, and he'll be potting goals along the way.

of those traded from us, I miss Stalberg the most. Although I think his play now is in direct correlation with his linemates.

Stalberg gets to play with Toews and Kane on a regular basis.

Stalberg has been a decent addition to my fantasy team. He's got 14 goals & 14 assists for 28 points in 43 games (50 point pace). It doesn't hurt that he's playing with such talented players around him. Almost anyone could score with those guys.

from tsn:

2010/06/30 Chicago Blackhawks traded Kris Versteeg and Bill Sweatt to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Viktor Stalberg, Chris DiDomenico and Philippe Paradis.

Looks like a win/win. I think both parties are still happy with the trade...imagine that.

Usually, there is a reason a coach puts a player on a line.

Desjardins estimates that about 40% of the game is captured by Corsi analysis.

Funny how that works .

Before people slag VS ( i know your not doing that ULF ) they should go and skim through whats being said about him on the Hawks board . The guys having a much improved season and thats why he's playing on the line that he is .

Stalberg played on Toews and Kane's line for about 8 games last year. He was credited with exactly 0 points in that stretch. That's why everyone was so down on him.

This year, he's way better. Working a lot harder and making his own chances.

No more trades with the Hawks, please.

They've robbed us of enough young talent.

I'm still fine with it.

Stalberg showed nothing but skating speed here and Versteeg is simply the better player. He didn't fit here in Toronto but that doesn't change the talent level.
