hey, so I havent done this yet, but, does it cost anything extra? My dad would be the one doing it, and im sure if it costs a penny more he wont do it. regardless of what the bonus' are
Doesn't cost anything as long as you physically do the exchange (drop off the old one and pick up the new one).... Just go to Verizon's site and search for locations and they will tell you which locations allow drop-offs, etc...
I was looking at Fios for my address...is DirecTV the TV they always offer, or is that what they're showing me because their regular service is still not available in my area? Some of their pricing plans are a little odd.
Make sure you give Verizon a call and ask them if its available. Ive had Fios for a year now and the website STILL says Fios isnt available in my area lol.
Just switched back to Cablevision after switching to Fios
-Glad to have News 12 back and Cablevision is cheaper by a lot if you are switching back to them- got the triple play with 3-hd dvrs and hbo for 120 month for 2 years, no contract
-plus the ipad app to watch tv is great
If you enjoy it, thats all that matters but going from CV to Fios is like driving an altima and then driving a GTR. Its really night and day. I've had CV come to my house 3 times in the past month trying to bribe me back with cheaper prices and a free Ipod touch. No thanks...
I dont miss "Channel Unavailable" messages
I dont miss No NFL network or Redzone
I dont miss laggy boxes
I dont miss pixelated compressed video feeds
I dont miss horribly slow download/upload speeds (compared to Fios)
I dont miss Fox/FoodTV/YES Network disputes
I couldn't imagine having Cablevision. The remote alone is maddening...is there still no way to go directly to the channel guide without having to go through the menu screen first? I'd break things if I had to subscribe to that nonsense.
My buddy next door (best friend renting your other house = WIN) has FiOS. His parents up in Edison have Cablevision (since FiOS is not available up there, yet). They come down here and are just so jealous of the service. His dad just bought a brand new 55" LED TV. And it's bastardized with the Cablevision stream on it (gross). It's really incredible how big the difference is between the two services.

Verizon updated the NY area to it's new guide and software, ver. 1.9. You are now able to connect external hardrives to your DVR. Up to 2 TB I believe, esata drives. New guide and additional settings. Native pass-thru of video is also available now. A little bit of lag with the resolution changes but pretty cool.
Why would you need to order 3 HD-DVR's when one multi-room DVR would cover the whole house?
This is stale and kind of off topic but I recently moved into a new apartment and put in one of those multi-room DVRs. This is Time Warner, so I'm not sure if the other companies' equipment is the same, but you have one DVR and the rest are just receivers of that signal. You can only program on the TV with the main box, and most importantly, you can't pause live TV on any of those other receivers. I was amazed how spoiled I was with that feature by having multiple DVRs. If I'm watching a live game in bed but can't pause it to go take a leak, what's the point? Within two days I swapped the multiroom for two standard DVRs.

Verizon's newest multi-room DVR has 2 way communication... So you can record programs and delete recordings from the non-DVR boxes set up in the other rooms.... Previously, you had to control everything from the DVR box or do so remotely through Verizon's website or smart phone app.
Now what you're referring to with the pausing live TV feature, I don't know any equipment that will do that for you from any of the providers.... You can only pause live TV on the TV set with the DVR.... The multi-room DVR function is supposed to allow you to playback recorded programs on the other cable boxes in the house.

I gotta check and see if the feature you describe, pausing live tv from a box other than the DVR, was enabled in the latest update.
edit-Just checked. No can do. Only on the DVR itself, as you said.

Now I know you could pause a recorded program in one room, and resume watching it in another... But the pausing live TV on non-DVR boxes doesn't' seem feasible to me, because that would entail the main DVR box recording not only the program information when it's fired up and running, but simultaneously recording the channel feeds for the other cable boxes when those are running... I'm just not sure how the device could handle keeping a recorded loop of live TV for multiple boxes at the same time.... Typically, if you are recording 2 programs simultaneously, you cannot watch regular TV on the DVR box (but you can on the non-DVR boxes), you are forced to watch one of the 2 programs being recorded.... Trying to think about how they could bypass this issue...

The new guide is absolutely sexy as hell and so fast to navigate. Love my Fios.

Yeah I doubt it's possible, at least short of just making them all DVRs and allowing them to basically stream a signal so that another DVR can pick up where the other left off. I was just saying that while 95% of my DVR use is the typical record/view later, the 5% of the time when I'm trying to pause/rewind live TV was much more important to me than I thought it would be.

I noticed the new guide & 1.9 yesterday. I thought it was a bit laggy at first, but I guess it had to get everything "loaded" first. It's far better than Cablevision has ever been!
Nice to have the external hard drive option. I wonder if there's a way to extract a file on that hard drive for archive purposes.

The best part about the Fios guide is the ability to create your own custom/favorites guide. I never check the main guide anymore... I added my 15 or so channels that I like to watch and that's all I check when I'm watching TV....

From what I remember the hard drive must be connected to the box it recorded from in order to be able to access it. I'm sure somebody at some point will think of something though.
now that im fully moved in down south, im looking into buying center ice. even though MSG only has 20 games exclusively (nbc/nhl/fox south aside).
I would still buy the package, but are the MSG games on center ice in HD?
on the schedule, buffalo, isles, devils and rangers game seem to be the only ones never in HD... what the hell is up with this? anyoen with center ice have some insight or is that schedule bogus?

If you get DirecTV, ALL games will be in HD. Including games on MSG 2. On cable it's hit or miss as generally they have very very few games available in HD.
