Paul Gaustad to Philadelphia

First of all I know we need a d-men, however we have over 4M in cap space.. How about we play Gus and Bourdon for now and bring a guy like Gaustad.

Paul Gaustad 29 year old, 6’5 about 220-225, excellent on faceoffs, 12th right now, 3rd 10-11, 6th in 09-10, (what we must have). Around 57%. Aggressive, exactly what we need on our 4th line. Plays hard minutes on PK, averaging 3min per game. Not a bad skater for a guy his size. Decent leader. Basically bigger, aggressive better version of Betts. I think Talbot and Gaustad will be pain in the ass to play against and both guys can score 7-12 goals per season. Could use a guy like that going forward. Will win some fights for us, throws 120-140 hits a season, displays sound work ethic

Flyers can move one of the forwards for a young d-men later during the season.

Rinaldo/Sestito Gaustad Talbot

P.S did not see Value of so went with speculation. Mods can change if you like.

Funny, I was about to post a OT: Paul Gaustad thread this am discussing whether he was a potential signing this summer. Perennial top faceoff man. Flyers are 27th as a team this year. Might be a bit expensive for next year's 4th line center though.

Sabres fan/come in peace/yadda yadda

He's more than a fourth liner, but not an ideal third line pivot because of his lack of skating and offensive instincts. However, he's a great value as a regular shift fourth line type of guy who gets bumped up to the checking line to take faceoffs and close out games.

He's one of those you kinda love to hate when he's on the other side. Talbot's another one.
I'd love to have him as a Flyer.

Is he looking for a pay raise after this year? I dont think the Flyers want to fill the 4th line center spot up with a 2.5 million player

Not interested. We have no money for someone like Gaustad. We need defense, plain and simple. I say Suter or bust.

We need faceoffs too. We are dead last, plain and simple.

He would bring some much needed size/leadership/face off skill to our forwards. He may make a decent penny but he would be worth it for one season while we try to make a push for the Stanley Cup. We are a very soft team right now and all the other teams know that. It would be nice to get some Gaustad grit in this lineup.

If we did make a deal for gaustad, that creates a major logjam especially at the C position and takes ice time away from guys like couturier and schenn, unless you could try and put couts on the wing but I'm not sure that's such a good idea this early in his career.

While that would be great, if we want Tyler Myers were probably looking at a deal like couturier + Jvr for him...

It wouldn't take away much time from Couts and Schenn. Gaustad would be the fourth line center and take important draws while also playing the pk. A logjam at center is not a bad position to be in.

I really like this idea, though it would be paying a premium for a 4th-line centre. There are few things more frustrating – outside of goals against, of course – than important face-offs in the Flyer end won cleanly right to the point for the start of ongoing pressure. This is particularly acute on the first PK face-off.

Line-up juggle:
Hartnell – Giroux – Jagr
Voracek – Schenn – Briere
Read – Couturier – Simmonds
Talbot – Gaustad – Zolnierczyk/Rinaldo/Shelley

Laviolette could even give Jagr a few games off to settle his injuries and go with:
Hartnell – Giroux – Voracek
Simmonds – Schenn – Briere
Read – Couturier – Zolnierczyk
Talbot – Gaustad – Rinaldo/Shelley

I'm a big fan of the Gaustad idea, for this year and next, assuming Buffalo isn't asking for the moon.

I'd go with Sestito (gives Sabres size back) + 2nd for Gaustad.

I'd love for Goose to join the Flyers if for no other reason than it ups my chances of running into a Flyers player on the street in the off season.

Giroux
Briere
Schenn
Couturier

Briere isn't moving to the wing.

He's got no where to play, unless he moves to left wing off the face off.

I appreciate your opinion on Briere. However, he's been largely a weak link in the forward roster this season, and if moving Briere to wing creates an overall stronger line-up, I'd hope Laviolette does it.

Schenn to Nashville, Couturier moves up, 4th line Center is open.

I'm kidding, but if we've learned anything from the Flyers, it's not to get used to who's on the roster.

If Pronger was not hurt and Bryz was playing as expected, the forum discussion would be faceoffs during a potential long playoff run.

As for next year, I don't see how Couturier remains on the fourth line.

I think we should focus on acquiring a dman, but if we can't land someone there, a guy like Gaustad would be great. I doubt we'll be able to re-sign him for next year though. He's pricey for that position. A fourth line center that is a solid faceoff man and can be used on the pk is somewhat of a need in the summer, I mentioned in another thread that I wouldn't mind if Jeff Halpern or Jay McClement is signed in the summer.

I'd rather go for someone like Adam Hall or Dominic Moore of the Lightning. Both are cheaper then Gaustad and still allow the Flyers to go pick up a depth defensemen, maybe even 2.

There's a glaring lack of JvR in your lines. Though I assume you were proposing those lines as if we acquired him today. Then Zolnierczyk or Rinaldo would be out of a lineup spot when he returns. Can a team be too deep? I'd also look to see if BUF would add a guy like Gragnani to the trade. I have no idea what the asking price would end up being though...Might be someone like Read + pick(s)?
