Hemsky Is On Detroit's Radar

Part of the weekly chat with Lebrun.

Sergei (Madison, WI)

Sometimes, when someone asks you about a possible trade by Detroit, I hear you mention Hemsky and I want to know why? I don't see him fitting anywhere on the offense! He is not good enough to be in the top six, our checking line is great, so, where? Third line? Then who's the odd man out and why? The only player on the Wings I'm not thrilled about is Ericsson on defense, and that's where Sutter will hopefully come in.

Pierre LeBrun
(11:27 AM)

All I can tell you is that the Wings have scouted him closely. A Wings source confirmed to me he is on their radar. Doesn't mean they'll actually go through with it _ especially not if Edmonton asks for too much _ but Hemsky is of interest to Detroit

Of course he is. He'd fit in perfectly with his style of play. Whether there's a spot for him or not is an entirely different matter.

Noooooo! Seriously, if we give up a good pick or prospect for an often-injured playmaking winger when our top 2 lines are developing fantastic chemistry...

Cmon, Holland wouldn't manage assets that poorly, would he?

Honestly he isn't that costly in terms of cap 4.1 which is 1.5ish come trade deadline. I think the other thing to take note of is that Edmonton probably would take a guy with some money left this year in order to maximize their return on Hemsky.

would love to add Hemsky but not at the cost of a top prospect or so

what would it take? Hemsky has been as injury-prone as they come and also UFA after this season. so what would you want for him, Edmonton fans?

Ideally we are looking for a d-man first. Be nice to have someone that can jump in right away, but someone that is on the verge of making the NHL would be okay too.

If we can't get that we look at the 1st and prospect route.

This has been a rumour for most of the season. Hemmer is a good fit in Detroit but a big risk. Likely a rental but the big question is if Hemsky can stay out of a shoulder sling through the playoffs?

Hopefully Holland doesnt get suckered into to giving up anything close to that.

The league would have to make a rule to prevent Hemsky and Datsyuk from being on the ice together. Unfair amounts of dirty mittens.

I think probably something around Brendan Smith.

If the GM feels your close to the cup and gets him and you win it all, does it matter? What do you want more? The Cup, or a prospect and pick? I know what I'd choose.

Im not a Hemsky fan but Detroit is a good fit for him. On the PP with Datsyuk would really help Detroit's PP. There's just too much risk giving up large assets. 2nd round pick and maybe a mid grade prospect. If the price is higher they need to make sure that price is paid for a player who brings more to the table.

If that's the asking price, Detroit doesn't even consider making that move. Detroit only has 4 dmen signed for next season and Smith has been groomed by Detroit to come in if they lose any of their top 6. Besides, Hemsky hasn't made himself an overly valuable commodity.

I think our chances of winning it all are the same with or without him. He's not an impact player anymore and we have passers out the wazoo anyway. He would not play in our top 6.

Plus, if we give up somebody like Brendan Smith, we lessen our chances of winning the cup in future years. Or even with a pick, our scouts are red hot right now and I don't want to give them less to work with.

I really don't understand the fit. Obviously would play well in a puck possession system but we have too many identical players. We really need a sniper that doesn't disappear for 20+ games at a time.

As for Smith, that's a 'hell no'. Something based around Kindl and a pick might work.

smith, tatar, mrazek, nyquist, sheahan are all non-starters from the wings POV.

you can get as good a player for a 2 week to 2 month strech run for significantly less

With Detroit's luck, they'd get Hemsky for scraps and he'd have a monstrous second half and playoffs, resulting in a 2012-13 regular season of the following: 80 GP, 24G, 57A, 81PTS. Typical Red Wings amirite?

A first round pick is pretty much the average for a rental of Hemsky's caliber. All the prospect names you mentioned are not worth more then a 1st.

Hemsky is a perfect match for Detroit. Hemsky + Petry for 1st + 2nd + Smith because they know they can resign Hemsky at a reasonable price.
