By the sounds of it, Edmonton is asking for more than Detroit is willing to offer. Which is understandable from both ends. Thus, this trade is probably unlikely to happen.

Since nobody on this site is running either team, I would say that the trade could be made.

I meant based off speculation from Lebrun.

He didn't speculate on a return as far as I read.

The rumour and speculation is that IF IF IF IF Detroit goes for Hemsky--they are going to offer their first and a mid prospect

Who in your system do Detroit fans consider a "mid prospect"?

Hemsky is a game breaker.. EDM trades Andy frigging Sutton if they want a late 2nd or 3rd round picks.
You don't get paid for the old Hemsky, it's the 2012 version of Hemsky. He is not gonna fetch a 1st or a top-prospect, any GM would be ******** to do so. Hemsky is made of glass and could easily get injured the first game, if any GM wanna risk high assets for him then they shouldn't have a job in the NHL.

A 0.5PPG gamebreaker.. lol, it's not 2009 anymore..

6 points in 8 games played. 6/8 = 1?

Edit: Did you mean one powerplay goal? He does have one powerplay goal but I'm sure that's not what Panthers was talking about.

PPG = Points Per Game...

And he's still made of glass, and what he has done the rest of the season isn't enough to fetch what Oilers fans think imo. That would be a waste of valuable assets.

I would consider the Landon Ferraro's of the world to be a mid range prospect. The most I would give for hemsky would be Pulkkinen+2nd rounder (with a condition that it becomes a 1st if they make it to the finals.)

Any player could get injured in their first game. Its not unheard of to have injury troubles for a couple seasons, then turn it around.

Hemsky has looked better lately after a slow start and is still in his 20s. He's basically been a 0.9ppg player his whole career with no help, so to think he doesnt have that in him anymore at the ripe old age of 28 is silly. And thats why there is interest in him.

Could I interest you Oiler fans in a big ol NHL ready defeseman by the name of Jonathan Ericsson? 6'4 221 pounds of mean defensive tenacity, clears the net, plays the body, amazing passer, and a great scoring touch.

lol some Oilers' fans think they can get Brendan Smith?

I think a 1st + bad/decent prospect is the value for Hemsky.

Hemsky will fetch a 1st and prospect(quality ?) at the deadline if he's still healthy. I can't see the Oilers wanting to add yet another bottom pairing defenseman like Kindl
RFA>>>>UFA.

The teams holds most if not all the cards dealing with RFA's. UFA sees the player holding all the cards and is not a guarantee of resigning.

Hemsky, with all his baggage going to a contender would most likely view him as a pure rental. Hemsky would most likely go to the team flashing the best contract come July 1st.

GM's laughed at it last year, what makes him so much more intriguing this year to warrant that kind of over payment?

Holland isn't that dumb.

Ericsson+1st

for

Hemsky+Peckham

Fair? I dont watch enough Detroit games to judge him but it seems like he has all the right assets to be a good dman but just isnt in Detroit fan's plans for the future it seems.

Last year he played the best hockey of his life and this season he had a 25 game slump after a major offseason surgery and since then has got 7 points in 7 games.

He isn't worthless because of a slump GM's aren't stupid.

To be honest I would like Detroit to make a bigger trade with a better partner to also aquire depth. Ruuttu + Gleason/Spacek from Carolina would be better and might be cheaper too.
I don't think the few who ask for the 1st + Kindl/Smith represent the masses when it comes to Oiler fan's expectations for returns in trading Hemmer. But I do think it will be a 1st at bare minimum.

Given the limited amount of sellers/rental players at this deadline, I highly doubt you get a Hemsky/Ruutu/Smyth at a price of your choosing. Its a free market that is dictated by commodities. It might take a while to heat up, but whoever flinches first will set off the arms race. The first player dealt doesn't necessarily set the bar either, each subsequent deal may cost more depending on the trading partner and whether the seller deems it a desperate reaction to a previous move by a rival. People debate this every year.... and are quickly silenced as the dust settles on the trade deadline.

Ruutu will likely net around the same as Hemmer. Start with a first as the basis of negotiations. Gleason likely a 2nd +. Not saying it doesn't make more sense for DET to pursue Ruutu over Hemsky, just don't think its because it will be a bargain compared to the asking price for Hemmer.
