Sorry folks, but Tanev isn't the answer either.
I don't think there's any team in the league that DOESN'T rely on the big 4.

Can anyone name a team that has 6 top 4 defenceman and actually perform like one?

Welcome to the salary cap world

Every team does you're right, but the risk of injury and the massive drop off between our good four of Edler/Hamhuis/Bieksa/Salo and our, ''questionable''..four of Rome/Alberts/Ballard/Sulzer is magnified more than on other teams.

Imagine Boston without Chara...

Yeah, it's Tim Thomas or bust.

Ballard is hasn't been playing poorly. Rome had a brutal game against Anaheim and Alberts is Alberts; functional, but limited.

Tanev is RH shot and makes good decisions with the puck. I think if he looks good in this call up, he may not be sent down when Salo returns. Tanev and Ballard are decent pairing.

Either way, Tanev helps a lot because now we'll only have one guy (Rome) playing out of position on the wrong side, instead of two depth guys playing out of position. I'm hoping they at least try Edler-Tanev at this point in the season to see what we've got there; it's not totally out of the Rome of possibility that Tanev plays well enough we can run a Ballard-Salo pairing when Salo is healthy and limit Salo's minutes a bit with Edler-Tanev playing the tougher match-ups. Best case scenario.
Please, do explain this.

As much as I love Tanev, I think he's a bit overrated.

I think he'll be up until Sami is back. Then back to Chicago until they are eliminated from contention, then if still possible, back up here for the playoffs.

Haha, whoops...meant to write 'realm of possibility' but somehow came out that way...must have Rome on the brain or something.

I think some people are forgetting that he struggled at the beginning of the season (not pre-season, where he was good). Nonetheless, he has the potential to be much better than Rome/Alberts/Ballard/Sulzer.

Our first look this season. I'm excited to see what another year of being a pro has done to his game and strength. He clearly has the ability to be a solid top 4 defenseman.

I really hope he can develop a nice shot, or take his already good offensive vision to the next level... could be a more durable version of Salo after all is said and done.

Reaction to Ballard's atrocious game last night? I seriously questioned how he ever made the NHL, the way he was playing last night, let alone got given a huge contract.

Wouldn't be surprised at all to hear of a trade soon.

The entire blue line outside of Salo was terrible to start the year. Hamhuis and Bieksa were like each -6 to start the year. Ballard was a -11 or some ridiculous thing. I wouldn't really judge a rookies performance on a portion of the season when all the veterans were arguably even worse.

I look at this as a bit of a try-out, let's see where he's at. I'm hoping he gets an extended look next to Edler, if he can somehow fit there at even strength were doing great. Either way we need to acquire a dman, but if Tanev appeared ready to make a bit more of an impact it'd be nice to know.

It's about time. Sure, Tanev struggled early in the season. But who didn't? We were a trainwreck coming out of the gates and all this proves - surprise, surprise - is that Tanev is incapable of anchoring a defense corps when the entire team could stay on the same page or complete 3 consecutive passes. I fully expect a much better showing from him. He reads the play well and knows the correct play to make at the correct time, much like Edler did earlier in his career.

I like this. Play Tanev with Ballard, and maybe Ballard would feel the need to play a more simple game, since he's playing with a newbie.

For anyone who's actually WATCHED Tanev in the AHL, how ready does he look, REALLY? I've heard good things.

Based on his track record you have to figure Gillis will dig himself out of his own mess. Be interesting to see how things shake down after the deadline.
This is ridiculous, considering that Gillis has made it clear that this would be happening, and that he has as much faith in Tanev as he does Alberts, Rome, or Sulzer.

This isn't so much calling up an AHLer as it is bringing him back after a conditioning/development stint.

Its about time. Alberts is just plain awful. Everytime the Canucks were pinned in their own end vs LA, Alberts was the center fold.
