Here's how I feel about DP. He's earned every chance to get his career back on track. He committed to the franchise when few others did. He seemed to be the only player really pissed off after losing to Tampa in the playoffs. He carried this team many nights the years before he got hurt. He's earned a lot of my respect by battling back so hard from all the bad luck (and a couple self-induced) injuries. He's never had a fair shake due to the circumstances around his acquisition and the big deal he signed. I've always been a fan and supporter of him.

If the time has come that he simply is too broken down to attempt to come back anymore, then I'll feel sadness and regret. He is a warrior in my view, but the body won't cooperate. A shame. He doesn't deserve the vitriol, but it is starting to look like it's time for him to move on to a new phase in his life that won't leave him a cripple in 20 years.

If DP retires from the ice, I would be shocked he doesn't stick around in the organization somehow as long as Wang owns the team.

I don't know if this has already been posted or not, but here it is: (the interesting stuff is in the last paragraph, about the new CBA possibly facilitating an RdP departure)

Jeez, I didn't realize it was at no cap expense. Gotta be done if that's the case.

The whole no cap-expense buyout with a new CBA is only speculative. There is just as real a shot of it not being included in the new CBA, especially if the CBA makes a system very similar to the one that is already in place.

for a normal, functional team, it'd be a no brainer.

that said, unless C WANG personally benefits financially, i don't believe we'll be so lucky as to see a buyout. the last season and a half has shown me that C Wang is using this contract to reach the CAP FLOOR- which he is obligated to reach. to put it simply, he figures, "The cap floor is $XXX. I am contractually obligated to pay RDP $YYY, so I may as well use $YYY to reach $XXX. Subtracting $YYY from the equation doesn't change the fact that I have to reach $XXX." In short, what incentive is there for C Wang to do this?

No HOCKEY FAN/ISLANDERS FAN on this board- big RDP fan or otherwise- can argue that RDP's $5M (or so) annual salary wouldn't be better spent on any of a number of team needs. To argue this suggests either you're blindly loyal to a player, you're a Rangers fan having a little fun at our expense or you really just aren't paying attention. In fact, the $5M would have to be spent on SOMETHING (i.e. to reach the CAP FLOOR).... Even a big fan of RDP has to admit, for the amount he's played over the last four seasons, we could do much better with out $.

I still can't hate RDP like some people, but I cannot wait for him to be off this team so I can finally watch a team that is- if nothing else- legitimately reaching the CAP FLOOR.

ps- I even understand Wang's position.... As an Isles fan I hate it, but I get it.....

Sadly, I am sure that Wang feels that DP is worth more to the franchise as a built in 4.5 million towards the cap that insurance winds up paying a portion of each year.

At least I think insurnace winds up paying a portion of his salary when he's injured each year. I could be totally wrong on that.

Either way, the 4.5m is nice because it's $ that needs to be spent, but there's no need to convince anyone to come to this hell hole.

Stand up dude, great with fans, super dedicated to the organization and probably super cool to hang out with but just not cut out to be a starter anymore in my opinion

If Rick DiPietro was on IR when a lockout began, Islanders would have to pay him. Hence today's very official announcement.
He was eventually going to be taken off IR this just helps Wang's wallet in the case of a lockout.

Wow, only 3 games under .500 playing for a crappy team all these years. Let's see what happens next...

Speaking of Wang's wallet..

Having DP on IR for very long stretches saved Wang boatloads of money.

I remember reading when these long contracts started happening that standard NHL/NHLPA insurance on contracts were only 6 seasons and so anything longer than that had to get specially insured by the team, or have the team assume the risk.

2011-12 was the 6th season on DP's contract, meaning now that this season (2012-13) onward the NYI are liable for all money this contract.

Whether they have a special insurance policy I don't know.. nor am I saying that DP feigned long-term injury in a scheme to essentially have the insurer pay his salary rather than Charles Wang..

But now that the standard contract insurance is up, it'll be interesting to see if DP's IR stints aren't nearly season-long like they have been in recent years..

Some teams try and get the best players they can to win. Luongo is riding the pine. Vancouver must care about winning. We're going with the tried and tested distractions again. We must care about winning (draft lotteries) as well.

Just retire. Someone in the franchise ops must show some pride, right? (or did Wang fire them for it?) Wait....LaFontaine left. Does he count?

He should get a try out in camp to beat out the top two goalies but NOT have a spot. But this is LI and Wang runs the ship. Tell him it belongs in the water.

Dipietro's status? (DP injures groin post #98/Denies injury post #129)

We all know if DP can stand on skates and has a pulse he will be the starting goalie or split time with Nabby, so I was wondering what everyone thinks about how the lockout will affect him.

Well, he can't lose any games when there are none being played, so I'm sure he's happy about that.
