The Curse of St-Patrick

Similar to the "Curse of the Bambino,", when Babe Ruth was sold because ownership needed money, I fear the Canadiens may have succumbed to the Curse of Patrick Roy.

Over the years, since that dreadful day in the 95'-96' season, we've had some of the the most infamous stories of defeat, collapse... near misses.

From the dark years... 98'-99'-00', the first times the storied Montreal Canadiens missed the playoffs, first time in 59 years. Then they missed it for a second consecutive season, first time since 1922. They then went on to miss them 3 times in a row. Only happened 2 times in their 100 years of existence. All this is only the beginning.

Saku Koivu, the heart and soul of the Canadiens at that time, diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

All-star vezina winning trophy goalie, comes to camp out of shape, later traded.

Lock out.

Saku Koivu's eye when up 3-0 in playoff series.

Maple leafs keep us out of the playoffs.

Markov's knee.

Pacioretty stanchion.

Wholesale of the team, completely renovated. Clean up. People are once again hopeful... and now, that hope is lost.

There's only one solution my HF friends, and its simple. We need to bring back the passion that Patrick Roy brought, and once again have the hockey Gods on our side.

Reverse the curse.

What did the Yankees do to reverse it?

The Yankees were the ones who got Babe Ruth, they went on to win several championships. (See Colorado Avalanche).

The curse was on the Red Sox who traded him, and only went on to win 84 years later, coming back from a 0-3 deficit against the very same Yankees. (There was also a lunar eclipse).

You're right, sorry. We were up 1-0 mid-way through the third... at home, going to take a 3-0 lead in the series. Then it happened.

Reverse the curse.

No worries then, it's already been 10 years!

I'll only agree to P.Roy coaching this team if P.Mcguire becomes the GM at the same time. This way in one fell swoop we can get both horrible ideas out of the way and move on from there!!

It's sad for us when McGuire is considered a great candidate to replace our GM.

LOL should we really be joking about this? I bet the Sox fans were laughing the first ten years or so...I mean nobody really thinks something like that can happen.
if any environment is ripe for it, its Montreal

There's 30 teams now and a salary cap. Plenty of teams are going to go long periods of time without a cup. In MLB you can outspend your way to championships. There's only a handful real contenders every year. Same goes for the NBA. In the NHL the contenders change every few years.

Add Zednik hit. The Carolina Theodore meltdown series when theo let in like 7 goals in game 6 to seal the deal after we had a near-commanding series lead of 3-1 practically wrapped up going 3-0 into the third in game 4...lost every game after that to lose the series in 6.

We got swept by tampa in 04 after a hardfought comeback series against boston...we could never solve that team.

Philly in 08 is horrible memories of biron playing like roy and begin or koivu costing us game after game with final period 2 min minors.

The decline had already started before patrick roy left. The habs missed the playoffs in 94-95 when Roy was still there. It was a strange season because they couldn't lose at home, but they couldn't win on the road either. So you could see warning signs even before Roy left, but it just got worse after the trade.

Fortunately, things are not doom and gloom as they were from 99-01... the franchise has rebounded a bit since then, but they have kinda stagnated into a level where they are middle of the pack.

is Steve Bartman living in Montreal now by chance?

I think BELL CENTRE is cursed...they left the old Fourm still standing there, with a FUTRESHOP /shopping mall ...

The history of the old Montreal Forum, to see it used in that manor, I can see why the Montreal Forum Ghosts are angry at that travesty.

Habs should pump 600 million into the old Montreal Forum renovate /extra seats, and redo it , and go back home.

Let the Bell Centre have the concerts 365 days a year.

The Montreal Fourm defined the Canadiens ...that is our HOME.

The Montreal Forum should be LIKE FENWAY PARK......Wrigley field

Montreal will never win at Bell Centre....they sold out the history for money.

I think he didn't say 'I'm done', I think he ushered a curse not unlike the one Jacques de Molay put on the French aristocracy as he was being burned at the stake.

If Patrick Roy's last game as a Hab took place at the Bell Centre, there would have been glass separating him from speaking directly to Ronald Corey. Also, the Red Sox did not win a World Series between 1918-2004 and the Cubs have not won since 1908, so I really do not want to emulate those franchises.

You should add Youppi, aka "the big orange puke", to your list of calamities!

------------

Patrick Roy really hates to lose.

Hell to lukewarm former Sens!
Hail to Passion!
Hail to our next coach!

Oh I know, Serious HABit. I know. Like I said, some of the most infamous stories of defeat, collapse, and near misses. He was never the same after that hit.

The only curse we've had is bad management. I strongly suspect that hiring Roy will only prolong that curse.

Patrick Roy is a winner, and he'd be welcome back in this team at any moment.

Serge Savard on Roy-

Quote:
Few people know Roy as well as Savard. You don’t have to be reminded that Savard was the general manager who drafted Roy in 1984. Two years later, rookie goaltender Roy was the biggest reason the Canadiens won their 23rd Cup.

Roy brought home another Cup in 1993 – this time along with the Conn Smythe Trophy. Two years later, with Savard no longer the GM, Roy was shipped to Colorado.

“With Patrick, it’s all about passion,” Savard explained. “I could see him accepting the job and getting the best out of his players. His junior team in Quebec is a gold mine. And it’s been a winner because of the passion Roy brings to every game – just as he did with us
Its time to right our wrongs.

Same here. Though I suspect Roy actually has somewhat of a chance to do well at least. Pierre McGuire on the other hand... he would be pitiful.
