You just said that he isn't their #1 center but then stated they would want Strome. I don't think Buffalo would be stupid enough to think they are going to get blue chip prospect for a 2nd line center? You've pretty much contradicted yourself.
because i think buffalo would be stupid enough to ask for strome? I really dont think I have...
I would make a deal for Roy but I wouldn't give much for him. There is some risk like him throwing a hissyfit at some point. The Isles don't need that. I like the 2nd rd pick and maybe a mid lvl prospect idea. Watching this team change over the last 3-4 years, blocking shots has become a major improvement and one of the noticeable changes.
I for one am a big fan of Roy, I really think he would fit well. I think he could be had for peanuts too, maybe a 2nd straight up, or 3rd + Bailey (if Franz is kept)?
I've seen Islanders-fans on this board demand a late 1st round choice for Frans Nielsen, who is out of a contract after this season, but you think that Roy can be had for a 2nd round choice straight up.
That is SO far out.
Roy haven't had his best season that's for sure (has Nielsen?), but he has one more year on his contract and is only half a season removed from a 1 point per game average and seasons of 63, 81, 70 and 69 points before that. And they are almost the same age.
I want the Islanders to target the smallest players in the league. Then when they sell the team to Kansas City they can rename them the Lollipop Guild, make the team color green, etc.
Goodness folks, enough with bringing every talented dwarf this side of Oz on board. Yeah Roy has skillz. Whatever. Our team's lack of SIZE is already hurting them. You know the expression, if you are in a hole, stop digging? Well, if your team is already too small, stop making it smaller.

We lack skill just as much as we lack size, sure a second line center like Mike Richards would be great, but that simply is not going to happen, Roy is a very good center, and a center depth chart of Tavares-Roy-Bailey would be very good.
I think that the Islanders can find players that fit their specific needs. The "we should just take what we can get" mentality is what has given us the last 25 years of Islanders hockey.
I think I'd rather keep Bailey than Nielsen. I know many of you will object. BUT, here's my thoughts:
Bailey's a pretty good defensive player and makes a lot less money than what Frans would be looking for. I don't think we lose much, defensively and Bailey's got far more offensive upside and he's too young to give up on.
Nielsen's proven to me that he's not good enough for a #2 C on a good team. He doesn't have the offense. He also doesn't have the size/strength for a prototypical 3rd line shut-down center and physically, we aren't any worse off having Bailey there.
I don't care about the money but Wang does. This would probably save us $2-2.5Milllion for next year (what Frans would probably make vs. what Bailey will make) and that's money we can use to upgrade in other areas (like defense or a #2 Center)
Finally, Nielsen would bring back a better return than Bailey. We must consider that as well.
If they sign Nielsen, I won't be upset at all. He's a solid player. I just hope it's not for $3MM because that's too much for what he brings. We'll never been a cap team (unless you count the bottom) and those dollars saved can significantly (potentially, anyway) improve the team in other areas.
They could sign both nielson and bailey and be 12mil (give or take) under the cap floor. Money wise is not the issue. As of right now i think Neilson brings way more to the table then Bailey. I think Bailey will have a great Career in the NHL, but where do we place him. He will be waisted on the 4th line and out of his league on the 2nd. We have Strome developing and could go out and get a 2nd line center, which is more important right now then waiting for Bailey to take the spot or for Strome to mature.
Like i said before, players like Nielson win championships. The guy is so good defensivly, has great vision and passing. Put the guy in the right role and he will flourish.
JT scored our only two goals yesterday, please remind me why we are more focused on his size than his skillset that would help put the puck in the net..

Look at it this way Kevin - because of Wang's salary limit, and only so many funds that can be portioned out to so many better veteran players, every high end UFA salary (for this club) you spend on is one less you can use on someone else. Right now the club is small, whether it is physically small in terms of players who are short and/or lightweights, or it is in how they play, like the weaker players. The full time players clearly not falling into that category are Martin, Hamonic, Jurcina, Staois, Tavares... Okposo and Bailey have been making strides toward joining this club too, and that's encouraging but ultimately they are below average on the physical spectrum. Last game Carolina's defense pretty much bodied the club away from Ward, underscoring the theme of skills over brawn our club currently demonstrates.
So why not try to get a player that has skills and size? Isn't it better to fill a need?

Agree 100%.
I do not want Derek Roy on this team because he's a shrimp. Call me 'vertically prejudiced', but that's how I feel.
