"It is important to note, that although McDonagh left the game, the reports we have received at this time are that there are no apparent injuries."

From the Shanny video.

Agreed. I agree with everything Shanny said, and would say that the suspension is a good length.

I think if Ference was not a first time offender for a hit like this, he would have been given 5.

I was too busy replaying the last part of the video regarding the no apparent injury to McDonagh. I can give two ***** about Ference. As long as McD appears to be fine(judging by what Shanahan said),its a good day.

It's just always nuts when someone can beat you with news.

I swear that your brain is somehow wired into the internet and these things pass directly to your head.

They could sit him on Tuesday and give him 10 days to recover.

I think it is a bit of a disgrace that injuries play a role now when the league decides punishments. Just because a player doesn't get hurt doesn't mean he couldn't have been seriously injured on a reckless play, and imo it makes it hard for players to really figure out what is suspendable and what isnt.

I am surprised Marchand got just 5 games looking his rap sheet

Quote:
Salo didn’t play Monday against Florida because of a concussion, and his status is unclear. His injury and Marchand’s discipline history were considered in the suspension. Marchand was fined $2,500 earlier this year for slew-footing Pittsburgh’s Matt Niskanen. Marchand was suspended for two games last year for elbowing Columbus’s R.J. Umberger in the back of the head.

I thought 3 games was slightly excessive just like I thought 5 games for Marchand was same. But both dangerous hits deserving suspensions

Three games for Ference fits into scale of sentences previously established by league/Shanahan but does nothing to act as deterrent.

Intent to injure is an inference. You can't get inside a guy's head. You see the hit, and the best you can do is make a judgment as to his intent. But it's still just speculation.

Recklessness, on the other hand, is not an inference. It's observable. And I think it deserves just as severe a suspension. "I didn't mean to hurt 'em" is a 3rd grade excuse. If you are an NHLer, you are responsible for your actions, whether or not you had malicious intent. That kind of hit can paralyze a guy, and if you're too stupid or uncaring to not know that, that's too bad. The consequences should be just as severe.

This was a very dangerous play that could have resulted in serious injury. We as fans, the Rangers and the NHL got lucky again.

Someday that luck will run out. Only a matter of time and numbers. Somebody will have their career ended..or even worse.

Is it fair? Yeah, I suppose it is. But the NHL and hockey have a bigger problem than being fair will not rectify, IMO.

Are we sure McD is uninjured? Or is it just not being reported?

We need to be careful with McD here. After the hit by his brother Marc Staal had nothing serious either and a few months later he misses half the season with a concussion.

Shanahan said that according to the reports he received, there was no apparent injury. If someone says otherwise we'll update the title, but right now that seems pretty reliable.

I'm relieved, but I'm not exhaling until I see what is revealed tomorrow from the practice reports. Wouldn't be terrible to sit him Tuesday night even if he is mostly OK and give him a solid 10 days between games.

I agree. The same hit can lead to no injury or paralysis/death...why should luck (or lack thereof) be a major factor in determining punishment?

That said, I predicted 3 games a few pages back. So I'm ok with this.

Good to hear it seems he's okay. Probably was just winded.

Would have been a huge loss.

and once again most of the board over reacted...Supersonicmonkey was already calling concussion and being out for extended time..sure it was an ugly hit but you cant talk like experts unless you are an insider...wait..gather info...and wait some more...don't fly off the handle and make assumptions...the best line this year was Boyle calling game 8 a must win..sometimes I wonder if I come here for comedy or Hockey?

I don't see a lot of reason for the Rangers to tell the league that McDonagh is uninjured if he really is.

Yeah, my favorite post was the "season's over" claim by someone who shall go un-named right after McDonagh went down. Talk about ridiculous. Some people really need to get a hold of themselves.

Honestly I'm a bit upset Marchand was suspended.

It was a dangerous play. Yeah.
Repeat offender. Yeah.

Ten years ago this hit wouldn't even have been an issue. This league is too soft. McDonagh is fine, should have just let the teams have some tenacity towards each other, not step in everytime the physicality steps up.

McDonagh skating under his own power, using both arms to support himself, and flying after the game rule out nearly every injury.

I wouldn't be surprised if he missed a game or 2, but that's minuscule when compared.

What made the injury more frightening was the fact that the game ended minutes later. If it was in the 1st period he likely would have returned to the bench I'd imagine.

Evolution in technology and physical training necessitate changes in rules and what is and isn't acceptable. Players are bigger, stronger and faster than ever before, which is why we've seen such a dramatic increase in concussions and other serious injuries. If nothing is done, guys are literally going to start dying on the ice.

It's something every contact sport is having to deal with at the moment. It is what it is. I'd rather watch a "soft" game of hockey than one where guys are killing each other.
