At the end of the day you just need to look at the goals allowed statistics. NYR is near the top of the league and since Girardi is our best defenseman, it can only be concluded he is one of the best defensive defensemen in league.

Phaneuf reminds me a lot of Mike Green. Very flashy, but the defensive game isn't the best...

I think even without salaries considered I'd take Girardi. He is the type of defenseman you win championships with...

Both are good but I'll go with Phaneuf.

Phaneuf easily. One good year doesn't suddenly make Girardi better.

Easy there. Do you have defensemen in Long Island ?

Anyway, Girardi.

Girardi has been a first pairing defenseman--a legitimate one--for two seasons now. He was always a solid player before that, too.

Based off of track records, I take Phaneuf. Currently, with contracts, Girardi.

Girardi had two good seasons and they are no where near Phaneuf's best years...nuff said.

Offensively, sure. Overall? I don't think so.

Besides, Phaneuf's best years were a while back. Girardi's are happening right now.

I think every poll Phaneuf is in has that included in it to sway the votes.

Taking contracts into consideration, Girardi. You can't reasonably claim that Phaneuf is so much better as to pay him twice as much.

But without contracts I take Phaneuf 9/10 times.

Any poll that has "taking contracts into consideration" is inherently biased and not actually concerned with seeing who is the better player.

Sure, Phaneuf is more of a game changer... in both good and bad ways. I'll take steady Girardi at lower cap hit.

Phaneufs years now are nowhere near his best years either so I'm not sure what your point is

NYR defensemen are getting overrated. it's not hard to play defense in front of lundqvist.

How do you not take the contract comparison into any "who would you rather had?" question? It was not "who is the better player?". LOL at the notion the poster wants to sway votes. Ridiculous.

I tried to vote Phaneuf, but I got lost in Girardi's big beautiful blue eyes.

A few million? What do you think a hard hitting, 50 point two-way defenceman with leadership on the top pairing is worth on the market?

I think that Girardi's defence gets a bit overrated by playing in front of the best goalie in the league in a tight system where everyone is responsible defensively. The Rangers as a team are phenomenal defensively where as the Leafs are definitely not one of the top defensive teams.

If contracts are thrown out the window there is no doubt in my mind it's Phaneuf, he brings too much to the table to pass up on. The physical edge, leadership and offense that he brings are things that are incredibly hard to find and I would say harder to find then a very good stay at home defensemen.

With contracts however, it becomes interesting. If you are a team that doesn't have much cap room it's easily Girardi but if you are a team that is not overly concerned with the cap (like my Jets) I think it's Phaneuf.

Dion will give more offense.

Girardi will give more defense.

Girardi is significantly cheaper, give me him.
