Umberger out with concussion like symptoms

Didn't see a mention of this anywhere, if I missed it I'm sorry.

Umberger left practice early today and was examined by doctors. "I've been told he has concussion-like symptoms," Richards said. "He'll be on the shelf for a little bit here. This all goes back to the hit he took in Anaheim." Richards said he did not see any side-effects during Tuesday's game in Chicago. He scored a goal, played 16:52 and had a plus-1 rating.

"That's the way it goes sometimes, too," Richards said. "We had a tough emotional couple of days, a couple of travel days and days without a lot of sleep. Maybe you attribute it to that. And then when you get (back in to practice), start moving around and you start to realize ... 'You know what? I shouldn't be feeling like this.'" The Blue Jackets will recall a forward from AHL Springfield this afternoon.
I don't remember ever having this many injuries. Wonder who they'll recall.

Probably Calvert or Mayorov. I would leave Atkinson down on the farm, let him play the All-Star Game and look to call him up later.

So does Shanny revisit his punishment? Probably not. He will probably tack something on later to the suspended player, much like he did with Wiz

Dispatch is reporting that NHL can NOT add additional games, so Shanny will most like keep this incident in the back of his mind

Is it just me or does it seem as though there are more concussions than ever since the head hit rules were made more strict?

That, and an increased emphasis on the risk of permanent brain damage has led to intensified examination of head injuries. All sports leagues are stressing increased protection for players and setting stricter standards for holding them out of competition. With everyone getting baseline tests against which to compare later results and players becoming less willing to ignore what they feel, the increase is pretty easy to understand.

IMO, its a combination of the league being more open about concussions and being more aware and careful about how they deal with concussions.
It sucks for Umberger and the Jackets, they can use all the stars they can get right now.

Umberger is far from MY definition of a star... That said, I hope he is ok, I've always liked his Buckeye roots.

Not to speculate too much, but Umberger could be out a long time, he has taken two of the hardest hits I have ever seen in my life before this season. One was while he was playing for Philadelphia and Brian Campbell of all people just annihilated him. The other hit was in game three of the playoff series against Detroit when Brad Stuart clobbered him. Concussions were not treated or diagnosed at those times as they are now, but I can almost guarantee he was concussed on both hits. If he's having bad symptoms I would hope the team would do the right thing and just shut him down for the rest of the season and let him heal properly so he's ready for next season.

There is certainly more emphasis on it, but it seems if a guy takes any blow to the hit it's an automatic concussion. Does anybody have the numbers of concussions this year compared to last. I'm sure it's night and day.

I dont know the numbers but I think its more a matter of the league being more aware and more proactive in how they approach concussions.

Placed on injured reserve today, which is the right move.

I hope this is a good idea. At this point, why not let Umby miss the next two games as well. That's an extra week+ off to be sure.
