Trade Rumors and Free Agent TalkTrade rumors, transactions, and free agent talk. Rumors must contain the word RUMOR in post title. Proposals must contain the word PROPOSAL in post title.
First off, forget about the source and the legitimacy of the "rumour".
(Hey, even a blind squirrel will end up finding a nut every once in a while)
But when a certain blogger wrote about this "Buzz" it got me thinking about whether there could actually be a fit.
"*The Lightning and Maple Leafs are both very interested in Kings backup goalie Jonathan Bernier. My sources are almost all in agreement here and the common thread appears to be the Kings want a goalie in return along with a solid forward."
Could a deal between the Kings and the Leafs work?
Bernier for Gustavsson + MacArthur?
Thoughts?
(again... thoughts on the value of the proposal I made. Not interested in the credibility of the so-called "source". We all know there isn't much there!)
i want no part of macarthur and bernier would likely only be dealt in a package for something better. they don't need another 2nd/3rd tweener, have enough with penner/stoll/loktionov.
of course, the teams are a fit, and gustavsson may have even built himself some value lately, so bernier and gustavsson could be the start of something... the kings aren't going to trade perhaps their second best trade chip (johnson being the best) for a backup goalie with one month of good play in the last two years and a tweener with one good season in his career (and having watched most leafs games this season - mac is a non factor on a lot of nights so far).

You will have to do a lot better than a "solid" forward. The Kings would be willing to add something to Bernier, but I don't think he gets moved until either he or Quick is signed to a long term deal. For Bernier to be traded prior to that happening it would have to be a deal to good to pass up. That deal isn't for Gustavsson and MacArthur.
Bernier and Remier have the potential to be among the best goalie tandems in the league, but also may fall flat on their face. It is a definite gamble, but probably a safer bet then the revolving door of "goaltending" that the Leafs have been dependent on all season.
I'd definitely consider it if the price isn't too hefty and i can definitely see legitimacy in this rumour.
kings don't need schenn, especially not for johnson. johnson isn't even a good fit for toronto lol. they already have gardiner, franson, liles, and phaneuf that can move the puck (three of those are possibly long term assets too). i wouldn't want johnson if i were a leafs fan. they don't need another d-man that has issues in his own zone. likewise, the kings have no need for a stay at home d-man struggling to find consistency. that part doesn't make much sense.
kadri isn't a fit for the kings. loktionov is our kadri~ maybe not as much upside for lokti, certainly not the pedigree or hype...but he's our offensive prospect trying to find his way in the NHL. the kings aren't going to deal for a forward prospect, they're going to go for a sure thing.
The Kings need a top 6 goalscorer, not an overhyped backup goaltender and a spare forward. And Bernier ain't gonna get traded without something the team needs coming back to LA.
No... Bernier is just as unproven, has strikingly similar stats and is almost the exact same age as Reimer. There would be no point in doing that swap.
Can Kulie play LW? That is where the Kings desperately need help... However, Bernier will command a much larger haul than that IMHO.
30 goals last season, plays both wings, a natural LW, but that deal will not happen IMO. Too much going back to LA, Reimer and Bernier are very similar goaltenders. Goaltending swap would be a wash and we'd basically be giving Kulemin for free.
kadri/colborne + Gus for Bernier + 4th/5th rd pick
I'd consider something around Kadri + Gus for Bernier + pick/prospect (Clifford?)
But I don't think LA goes for this. They don't need Kadri. They want something to help them more now. Not a just-cracking-the-league prospect.

Does MacArthur + Gus + D'Amigo for Bernier get it done?
(I don't think LA has interest in Grabo. They're already very deep down the middle)

I was thinking about this as well... Burke did like Penner in ANA, he just wasn't willing to pay the stupid money/term EDM threw at him at the time.

Bernier + Penner for Gustavsson + MacArthur + D'Amigo?
If a goalie goes the other way it's Gus, not Reimer.
And Kulie, despite the terrible season he's having, still has alot of value to the Leafs - more value than he would have in any trade.
There appears to be a rather large discrepancy here between what Kings fans know Bernier's value to be, and what Leafs fans believe his value to be... If our 2 GM's are talking, I can only hope that they are on more of a similar page than that of the people on the boards right now...
I'll say it until I'm blue in the face, the only way the Kings trader Bernier is if a top-flight winger is coming back to them.

You've got me very curious here. Can you give me an example of a "top-flight winger" you'd be willing to accept for Bernier?

Reimer hasn't even played a full season. And Gustavsson has outplayed him the entire year, how can they be among the best tandems in the league???
