Here is the video. Read loses control of the puck at the exact spot Thomas squirted the water.
Bruins fan coming in peace.

If you look closely, Thomas squirted the water somewhere close to the goal crease, whereas Read actually lost control of his legs (and the puck) some time before actually coming close to the crease, somewhere between the face-off dots in the defensive zone. This is about 6 metres (or 23 feet) from the goal line.
Since Thomas was standing close to his goal and he held his bottle in a angle pointing slightly down towards the ice, there is no way he squirted his water that far, even if you count in his size and the possible reach of his arms to extend his squirting. This means the water did not affect Reads shootout attempt at all.
Giroux scored and by the time Simmonds made his attempt, the water should have been frozen anyway.

I can't tell if squirting water onto the ice should be considered cheating, I don't know if there's a rule about it. But if it's a grey area, this might be taken up in the league. Keep in mind though, that this trick possibly could have come to backstab Timmy as well. There's a lot of possible outcomes regarding that situation.

i pictured bryz pouring a bucket of water on the ice before the shootout
then the puck would probably skip off the wet ice and somehow deflect into the goal and we'd here jj and clement say "not much bryzgolov could do on that one"

It makes it very difficult to handle the puck as it gets caught in any wet spots.
A water bottle doesn't drop as much water as a zamboni does, you know, and the water would be very localized, so Read would have to be very unlucky to hit that spot.

Meh. Not as bad as the Habs putting sand by the Flyers locker room in 2010.

I have to admit I would have never thought of that. Its very clever...

I imagine now that its been pointed out, it wont be too long until the league fixes this issue....

As a goalie, I can tell you that the little bit of water that Thomas sprayed would freeze almost immediately. If anything that little bit would make that localized area a little smoother, making it slighly easier to bfly slide.

That said you cannot compare the amount of water that a Zam dumps on the ice to even a 5 second squirt from a Gatorade bottle. That small amount would not make a frozen puck stick to that 6 square inch area.

There was a sand like substance outside the Flyers locker room in Montreal and it would dull the skate blades. A couple players had to have their skates sharpened repeatedly during the game and miss their shift.

During Saturday's 3-0 Game 4 Eastern Conference final victory by the Philadelphia Flyers over the Montreal Canadiens, NBC's Pierre McGuire made a curious observation according to the Philadelphia Daily News: That "sand or some other foreign substance" was covering the hallway floor near the Flyers' dressing room.
They denied it, of course...

Didn't Patrick Roy do something like this on a big penalty shot back in the day? Like skating between the goal and a few feet in front of the net and create a little pile of shavings to mess up the shooter?

I have been a goalie my whole life and at a pretty high level.
I always spray water in my crease and at the top before the game and before every period.
A lot of goalies do this. When the zamboni cleans the ice before the shootout with a dry wipe almost all goalies do this.

I feel like people are overreacting to this, and the water probably isn't why Read messed up.

Regardless of whether or not this is cheating, it is impossible for us to win a shootout unless our goalie makes at least one save. Bryz lost the shootout for us again.

If Bryz had the presence of mind to do this I would applaud him. I think it's brilliant.

That pissed me off. Giroux could have gotten hurt. Is your ******* really that sore Thomas that you need to trip the guy who scored on you? Pathetic.

A goalie on the Richmond Renegades did this.

Confirmed!

Well there's reports Tim Thomas didn't show up to the White House for the meeting with the President. If he skipped out because it's reported he's a "staunch republican", then he is an idiot. You go and celebrate with your team and the President even though you don't agree with the policies in place.

That's pretty comical considering Thomas plays hockey in a least conservative way.

Thomas was absent from the visit. According to Chiarelli, he opted not to come and will explain his reasoning later via his Facebook pg
