Politics aside, this had to have been awkward for his teammates and management. Suck it up and be with your team to celebrate your Stanley Cup win. He took one of the least politically motivated events that is ever held in the White House and turned all of the attention (most likely unintentionally)onto himself and his personal political beliefs.

I like that Thomas skipped out on the White House visit, because the Bruins need llama drama about how Thomas, I think the only American on the team when they won the cup, put himself before the team.
Query, what would he have done if he won the gold medal?
They said the incident wasn't the only deciding factor so who knows. But still, the person has been working there since 2009. I thought there would have been some forgiveness like with the octopus incident, which made us look much worse imo.
I would have also thought that someone higher up gave the order to go have a little fun on an opposing fan. I don't think a mascot would look around and try to find something (in this case silly string)to go into the stands with to cause mischief without the green light, unless that's exactly what happened.
