That depends. NHL is for SOPA. I'm sure they don't want want to have that distraction during the meat of their cycle.

Yeah but I find it hard to believe that the players would fall under the mold of this corporate initiative even if it directly effects them.

I expect this isn't the last we'll hear of major names in sports making their opinions public.

Hockey gives off the feel of a much less corporate locker room attitude compared to other leagues. Yes, it's a business, but we take pride in the fact that our players tend to display more humanity and more charitability than players in other leagues.

I just don't see how one can get around that. The team was invited, the team is being honoured. One guy couldn't put his own political beliefs aside to be part of the team. What if one guy said, "I disagree with the U.S. foreign interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq, so I'm not going to stand for the national anthem." More extreme, but it's still the individual who is choosing to make a statement on a team stage. Next year, what if half the team declines the invitation? What if it was a Russian player?

Incidentally, you didn't see Chara taking a stand like this. Know why? Separation of Lurch and state.

I'm perfectly okay with bold and, even though it may be unpopular for me to admit this, flag burning and other things. Whether or not I agree with the action, Freedom of Speech is extremely important to me.

Then again, I'm not exactly pleased with America at the moment. I've just discovered that they've started censoring guitar tabs online. I can't even learn a song in the privacy of my own home that someone with far more talent than I have was kind enough to create by ear so that I could play too.

The level of extremes that the American government is going is absurd. So any and all protestation against them right now is very much okay in my book (as long as it doesn't violate any human rights etc.)

I have to say that NDAA one is freaking brutal.....there should be more discourse about it....but I guess an Italian Ocean liner sinking is more entertaining...

That's the problem.

The media is heavily invested in politics; what gets played on the news and what doesn't.

3 goals for the Kings.

Not sure how this is supposed to be handled.

I don't know if I've watched a game where they score 3. It's kind of exciting.

Trevor Lewis, he of 5 goals in 122 NHL games, gets a penalty shot goal. Days after Darryll Sutter claimed he was carrying his line to make it 4-0.

Beef's and GKJ's GIF's are hilarious. Dave Lozo's tweets are pretty funny too about the score

They came within minutes of each other

The TSN panel said last night they think Ovie will skip the all star game. I hope he does, he doesn't deserve to be there anyway. That will give Hartnell a shot.

I am a little surprised that Ovechkin received the same amount of games as Ference. I thought Ference hit was a lot worse. Clear intent to injure.

If Hartnell goes to AS. I hope he does not participate in skating competition. I do not want to see him falling down and breaking something.

how can someone play in a sport as international as ice hockey and still be ignorant enough to enjoy the xenophobic nonsense that someone like glenn beck spews?

i mean his back up goalie is from finland, one of the most so-called "socialist" countries in the world

oh right i forgot, he's rich...

One time I was watching the show a caller called in, all he said was "you guys are a bunch of ****s" and hung up. It was pretty funny to see their faces.

I think I read in an article somewhere Don got a new job else where left the show and the network.

I still watch the show when I catch it, but to me it isn't the same. Plus their new time slot gets me, I can never make it.

Well at least thomas has a reason that makes sense. When the steelers player didn't go see obama, he said it was because the president only wants to see them when then win, not when they loose.

Ovechkin has told NHL he is not going to the all star game... no explanation I can see, and after this comes only a few days after his ban is this him throwing a hissy fit because the NHL gave him a ban?

Also, will this not mean another game added onto his ban from the Lidstrom and Datsyuk precedence?

EDIT: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=613450

From this it does actually look like he is simply having a strop.

I think Eklund mentioned Carter being moved as well...seems he'll get coddled/appeased at some point. I never thought he would last there anyway...boy did we rip Columbus off...

The Senators really got jobbed on the penalty shot. It was pretty clear that Phillips only knocked the puck to Anderson with his glove in the crease. It was funny, though, listening to the game on SportsNet, with Brown and Potvin, just getting more and more cynical as the game progressed. In the best of times, they act as though any hit on the Senators is a human rights violation.

Scott Howson is really signing a death wish if he's going to trade Carter after less than a full season.
