Bobby Ryan is Neal's closest comparable.

He scored 35 goals and 64 points in the season before becoming an RFA, and had a 30+ goal season before that (something Neal hasn't). All with very little PP time.

That earned him a 5 year, 25.5 mil deal...I expect Neal to sign something very similar.

Funny how it will work out...Neal's never had more then 27 goals, he has just over 30 games left and will finish in the 40's meanwhile Ryan will probably only get 30 again.

Wow! Off topic but Goligoski just extended at $4.6m per season. Sheesh!

I'd actually rather have Martin at $5 million the next 3 years than Goligoski for $4.6 the following 4 seasons. That's a heft hit but I guess the new going rate.

We're paying Neal $2.875mil this year to be a 40+ goal winger. If the pay increase is $2-2.25mil, we're losing Steve Sullivan and a grinder's salary. Okay? We're losing the salary of a goat and a 4th liner.

Just wanted to point that out. By the way, the cap increases every year, even if its only by $0.1mil.

Carry on.

I thought that was a pretty solid deal.

Not many young defenseman have a history of producing like he has.

agreed, most pens fans seem to judge players most heavily based on the eye test and their observations when it comes to turnovers but in reality a solid offensive defensemen like gogo is a good player to have. When you look at his play objectively he is very solid. With the market the way its heading, this is a good deal for them

Yeah, that Goligoski deal is gonna look real good in several years when players similar to him are signing for way more.

Neal is quality on the ice and seems like a great team mate too. I wouldn't mind seeing the Pens go long term on this.

The Ryan contract is a nice comparison.

I hope so too. But I think Neal has another level to get to. He may want to to take something more short term so it doesn't cut into his UFA years and a potential bigger payday.

One thing's for sure. No way is he leaving Pittsburgh. Pay him what's necessary.

4.6 a year is a huge overpayment for Goligoski. It makes me scared to think of what Letang will get when his next contract comes up.

If Letang has learned once and for all to take some velocity off his shot from the point so he can hit the net, then it's going to be pretty tough not to pay him 6 mil+. His only negatives are his less than ideal size, which he makes up for with his strength, and his previous PP woes, which it looks like he's worked on while out with injury.

I'm not too worried about resigning him. Staal is gone long before him.

If Crosby and Malkin are both healthy I would be shocked if Staal is kept especially with Neals raise and Letangs salary eventually doubling. I can see Staal being moved for a good pick + prospect. unless we get lucky and the cap continues to rise.

I kind of agree with this. Especially if Jeffrey can be a nice third line center at a fraction of the cost.

However, I'd much rather see them hold onto Niskanen, figure out a way to make Martin disappear and replace him with Despres before letting Staal go. I mean if paul Martin is the difference between Staal staying or not that's not good.

What scares me about giving Neal over 4.5 is a lot of his goals this year are kind of lucky bounces. Like he scores a couple from behind net couple deflected of like 2/3 defenders before going in, and some more that were purely malkin setting him up as in malkin does all the work beats the D fakes the goalie and Neal just chips it in empty net. Now there is nothing wrong with any of stuff except that if next year he doesnt get as many bounces he will be a 20 goal guy instead of 30+.

Also when Malkin/crosby arent on his line we saw his production drop to almost nothing last year. He should understand that if he goes to another team for 5mil plus and they dont have one of the best centers in the legue to feed him all season long his production will obviously decreace.

On top of that his release is really slow, so once he does establish himself as a good goal scorer other teams will defend his shot more aggresivly kind of what is happening to Ovie where D just stays in front of him and/or keeps him to outside reducing his shots effectiveness.

Now i still think we should resign him as he is by far our best winger but I also feel like he should give us a hometeam discount so maybe 3 years/4mil or like 5y/4.5mil.

To people who say trade martin to make room for Neals 5mil contract...Martin has a no trade clause so any trade would have to be approved by him so trading him isnt going to be easy. For Example he will not wanna go to some ****** team that loses every year, so good teams that martin does approve will know this and lowball us all day long.

I agree, I think Despres talent and size will allow him to have a smooth transition to the NHL. If i had to choose between keeping Staal or Martin I would definitely want Staal. With Despres being a regular next year and Morrow and Harrington a couple years away it makes Martin expendable. The biggest issue here is that Martin has a NTC and it will be hard to move him and that salary.

Next years lineup

UFA-Crosby-Dupuis
Kunitz-Malkin-Neal
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Grinder-CFA-Grinder

Top 3 lines will have a good mix of speed, skill and grit.

Orpik-Letang
Despres-Michalek
Niskanen-Engelland

Each d paring would have a more defensive minded guy and a guy who is more offensive minded.

Yeah, really. Just last game a faceoff win was in the top corner a split second later.

Neal sometimes charges across the blueline with full intent of releasing a long range bomb - that one tends to be a slower release. But other than that I see no problems with it, and really who cares when it's ending up under the crossbar so frequently.
