If it's not an opt out for the Tigers, I still don't like the contract for them.

And 35m/yr is too much for him, ryno

So lets hope this puts an end to the "Rogers is cheap" stuff. That is a crazy deal and stupid for any team no matter how you put it.

Well if you can imagine the Jays in the playoffs, then I can imagine Cabrera playing 3rd, even though he'll probably DH this year.

ps. Not any team can look dangerous on paper. In fact I could ramble off a quite a few teams that don't look dangerous on paper, the Jays being one of them.

Jays seem content to not lose out on strategic assets...Japanese pitcher we were supposed to be top choice? lost

Fielder wanted to come here? Lost

Fielder wanted a pile of money and a term that ignored the fact he is a fat ass. He signed up to be a DH for the next 9 years, not the last couple, all of them. To me that shows he took the money.

Did you not see the type of contracts they received?

It certainly handcuffs you for almost a decade if something goes wrong with either player which is possible.

Also, you're a slave to the media if you think those statements about the jays were true. There were no official reports saying we were a "top choice" for Darvish, or a "favourite" for Fielder.

You would have been ok with the Jays giving that kind of contract to him?

Unreal..

I can't imagine a fat tub of goo like Cabrera playing 3B. In his younger days with the Marlins, he was skinnier, so he could do it.

I don't think he is worth that contract but I also don't think any professional athlete is worth the large sums they are paid to play a kids game. It's all circumstantial I suppose.

Again, I dont think that he's worth it.. but why would I have cared in a non-cap league if my team overspent on one of the premiere free-agents. It's not our money.

What are you even talking about? Link to Fielder wanting to come here please. Yes they lost on a closed bid. So did everyone that bid aside from the rangers.

Because, it could hinder them from making other moves in the future. You don't want to be handcuffed with a stupid deal. Thought we were with the Wells deal, but we got out of it by miracle. I don't like the chances of it happening twice.

Then the last 4 years are worth 44 million so that would be $11 a year and not bad even if he slips a bit in productions easy to get rid of $44 million in today's mlb.

Who knows if there is an opt out clause for the team at a certain point or vesting options.

Let's see the full deal before calling it atrocious which is a high possibility but I think Fielder will be worth it right up to his 35th birthday and then you will see a decline.

No matter what his stats are he could go .300 25 hr and 110 Rbi's and people will think its a bad contract.
If he only hits 25 hr it's been a huge loss for the Tigers. That would make it an even more terrible contract. Especially if as you suggested their paying him 35 per in the first 5 years which is horrible on its own. I would bet there is no out clause and if there is it's only if he's heavily front loaded and it's for year 9.

I can. The difference is now I can imagine it without an albatross contract.

No opt out, spread out evenly over the 9 years. 23.4M per.

I love how I read this Jays thread all summer, and of the people complaining about the Jays not signing Fielder or Darvish I didn't see any of them at all post in the summer.

Complaining is much easier to do than having a thought provoking discussion.

That won't happen though because teams never frontload a contract like that. In fact, most contracts are heavily backloaded. Detroit are competing now so likely, its going to be backloaded so they can have money to make moves in the near the future.

Like I said, if they win their divisions and win a couple of world series, nobody will care about the contract.

Good signing.

Anyone thinks that the Jays should have signed Fielder to that much money is insane.

Wow. Beauty! If Santos falters at all, Cordero is available. Our BP is going to be amazing.

Drool. If true, will relieve some pressure on our young starters. The last year or two we've really counted on them giving us 7+ innings. Love Cordero.
