EDM - ANA Pronger Trade

Edmonton Oilers traded Chris Pronger to the Anaheim Ducks for Joffrey Lupul, Ladislav Smid, a 1st round selection in 2007, a conditional 1st round selection and a 2nd round selection in 2008.

So now that almost 5 years has past. We can look over this.

ANA
Pronger

EDM
Ladislav Smid
Joffrey Lupul (traded) -> Joni Pitkanen (traded) -> Erik Cole (traded) -> Patrick O'Sullivan (traded) -> Jim Vandermeer (not resigned)
1st 2007 -> Riley Nash (traded) -> Martin Marincin
1st 2008 -> Jordan Eberle
2nd 2008 -> traded to NYI for EDM own pick used to offersheet Penner.

So in summary the trade turned out to be Pronger for Smid, Eberle, Marincin (+/- some minor pieces I'm sure I'm forgetting)

The trade obviously was a win for Anaheim getting a top dman and ultimately the cup.

What about Edmonton? They were forced to trade Pronger after he demanded out, and I think now the return is looking pretty good. They ended up getting Smid a very good shut down dman, Eberle who is one of the best young players in the game and Marincin a very good prospect. However, it would have been better for them if they hadn't turned Lupul into nothing. But, the Oilers are very lucky this trade perfectly aligned with their current rebuild.

My Question is whats your opinion on the trade now that we know what most of the pieces are? Ducks win, Oilers lose. Oilers win, Ducks lose. Or win-win for both teams.

-Anaheim won a cup with the move.
-5yrs later, the Oilers are still a lot farther away from a cup now than before the trade.

Safe bet Anaheim won.

Come back in another five years?

We could have and should have got alot more for Pronger
Eberle was a steal and if Marincin becomes a top 4 d man it may end up being a even trade, but as of right now Anaheim won

Edmonton wins that trade ifd they don't waste the picks and actually work on improving their team instead of going down the drain every year.

Both win in a way. Anaheim immediately and Edmonton tbd. 1st line winger and a decent defenceman who can make long term impacts.

Ducks win the cup, Oilers have become the worst team in the league and a laughingstock.

Ducks win.

Agreed. The Oilers have yet to show they won this trade.

There's yet to be a clear-cut winner to that trade.

Because of the cup winning the ducks will never look as a clear-cut looser to that trade.

A little bit like Ignila vs Nieuwendyk, not looser, only big winner of this trade imo.

Pretty clear cut up to this point. Unless Eberle and Smid lead them to a cup then Anaheim wins hands down.

Why can't they both win? Oilers would not be much better with pronger. Ducks won the cup and got assets for pronger later, Oilers got young star in Eberle, a solid top 4 d-man in Smid and a great prospect in Marincin

Ducks win, obviously, because they won the cup and got quite a bit in return when they traded him. I'm not sure if that means the Oilers "lose" the trade though.

The Oilers don't even have Eberle if the Ducks don't make the finals. He was picked with a conditional 1st rounder.

Pronger asked for a trade. That alone gives two strikes to EDM right from the start imo. I voted for Anh because Pronger is a Force – however Edm did well under the circumstances.

There is no way Ducks lose... Whether Oilers are happy or not is trivial to Duck fans I am sure.

It's a win/win for both, when you get a player like Eberle, you aren't losing a trade either.

Using team results to judge trades is terribly inaccurate and a pretty stupid way of approaching it...
There are dozens of players on both rosters that had nothing to do with the trades.

Anyways, I think Anaheim won. They got a HOF defenseman while they had enough talent at other spots in the roster.

It looks like Edmonton might win in the future because Eberle is a stud, but Anaheim has already gotten enough from Pronger to make the deal worth it.
