Not being tremendously familiar with Malone, I just looked at his stats & salary. It's just a theory, but I think DL's looking for a guy who fits the Ryan Smyth mold.....

Age? Check.

Grit? (I'm assuming) Check.

Net Front Presence? (Again, I'm assuming) Check.

Veteran Leadership? Check.

Signed 'till 35? Check.

Forward, specifically winger? Check.

Anyway, it's just a theory.

The names linked to the Kings are never accurate. All of Lombardi's trades come out of nowhere and are typically unexpected.

Malone is about as much of a Lombardi player as there is, just not worth losing Bernier over though. I would love to have him on the team, but more has to be coming back or less going the other way. He is a blue collar, hard working pro who does all the little things and gets production in the dirty areas of the ice. I wouldn't doubt for a second that he is way up on DL's want list, just not at the price of Bernier.

Penner was since he was (sadly) the best player available at the deadline. Compare him to others who were dealt at the trade deadline, Penner was the most productive player dealt that day and many thought that he was acquired for a reasonable package. If he performed like many expected, the trade would've been a huge steal for the Kings. Of course the Kings end up with a lazy and unmotivated Penner.

Besides him, Lombardi's previous deadline acquisitions weren't as predictable. Nobody saw him trading O'Sullivan to acquire Justin Williams. Or the Halpern and Modin trades. My guess is that you'll see some moves along those lines again, in case you see players getting banged up, he'll bring in some reinforcements like Moen who can pretty much fill in on any line.

I also do expect him to try to go after a top six forward like Ruutu who isn't signed long term, giving him the option to pursue some high priced free agent forward over the summer.

I said before I want Moen and Kostitsyn. If not, Moen and Stafford and put Drew on the 3rd line with Richards and Penner.

Depending on the price, 100% agree on Moen and Stafford. Not sure on kostistyn.

I just did an article today...on some site I won't mention haha...and I had 7 players listed as targets we should go after..

Moen
Stafford
Kostisyn (Andrei)
Nielsen
Grabner
Brassard
Ruutu

seems like I was in line with what lot of others were thinking.

I think any of those guys would be a huge help.

Seriously Stafford would be awesome on the 3rd line. The guy mucks it up in front of the net. He is taking a lot of criticism this year in Buffalo but that whole team top to bottom is struggling. (aside from Pominville)

4 mill for Stafford is a lot if he's on the 3rd line where he likely won't produce. I'd be ok if you planned to use him with Richards or Kopitar.

Hey guys just checking in to see how things are going. Like I said during the summer I hope we meet in the finals. How has Mike been for your team so far? Looks to me like he is having his basic dam good season. I will have to say that I am really happy with the play of Simmer. He has fit in like a glove. Brayden has really stepped up his game since the Winter Classic. The game against Boston the other day was his best. Well I am glad this trade has worked for both of us. I will check back in before the end of the season.

GOOD LUCK!

Stafford makes 4 million? Rough. Andrei Kostitsyn makes over 3 too but he is a UFA.

Moen and Andrei Kostitsyn are both UFA's. That is a problem, so they could walk if we give up a bit.

I am hoping the Blues are shopping Chris Stewart, he is kind of struggling this year. 10 goals in 46 games.

I like Grabner too as he seems to be struggling as well. Dude has amazing speed, but got that new contract after being traded and waived and then having a big year and seems to be struggling.

I sent a question to LeBrun today:

Quote:
Almeida (Norway)

Do you think Lombardi will try to land a top-6 winger by trade deadline? Or will he wait until the summer?

Pierre LeBrun (2:34 PM)

I think that's the question Lombardi is asking himself right now. He knows he needs help on this first two lines at the wing, but also doesn't want to give up too much future.... my guess is that he'll make the deal if it doesn't cost too much

Yea, Stafford makes 4 for the next 3 years.

Matthew Barry also keeps bringing up Clarke MacArthur and his 1 year 1 million dollar deal. He is struggling in Toronto.

I would puke if we traded Bernier for Malone.

Lombardi suggested that he'd rather keep the pick and pursue a similar player via free agency. Fast forward four years later and Lombardi is still pursuing that type of player (and made an aggressive attempt to sign said player this past summer).

Kind of random, but does Lombardi have an e-mail that fans can write him to?

Malone is not now or ever been on the Flyers so you can check him off.
Think J. Carter, A. Asham, S. Downie, M. Knuble, S. Upshaw.........

That's kind of what leads me to believe we are in the hunt for Stafford if he is available. Only 26, signed for 3 more years after this. Definitely would be a part of a longer term plan then a rental.
